Maria reflects on what it means to be kamaʻāina, emphasizing connection and the kuleana we uphold to one another and to this place. She reminds us that how we show up matters, and that meaningful change begins by recognizing what connects us. By grounding ourselves in our shared connections, to people, place, and community, we gain a clearer understanding of our kuleana and the actions needed to create lasting transformation.

The work is not only to acknowledge our interconnectedness, but to actively cultivate pilina that sustain our communities and deepen our collective capacity to show up for one another.

One reflection that stayed with Jody was the idea that the seeds we plant, good or bad, are here to stay. She reminds us that what takes root in our communities and organizations shape the conditions others inherit long after we are gone. 🌿

Leadership requires us to look critically at what we have allowed to grow and calls us to identify the habits, systems, and practices in place that may no longer serve our people or purpose. As Jody points out, transformation is not only about what we are willing to w**d out, but also what we intentionally choose to cultivate in its place.

In this way, leadership becomes an act of stewardship and an ongoing commitment to creating the conditions for future generations, colleagues, and communities to thrive.

Kawika reflects on the inner work of leadership: identifying and uprooting the limiting beliefs, habits, and mindsets that can keep us disconnected from our growth, purpose, and potential as leaders. He reminds us that transformation is not only about what we are willing to release, but also what we intentionally choose to nurture in its place, and for Kawika, that’s pilina.

Through this process, leadership becomes more than a position or responsibility, but an ongoing commitment to self-awareness and the conscious choices that shape how we lead, serve, and show up for our communities.

ʻŌLA coach Christy Valledor shares how the program is deeply grounded in Hawaiian values, with every aspect of the experience intentionally tied back to ʻike and practices that offer a rich, culturally-grounded framework for ʻŌiwi leaders and for anyone leading in Hawaiʻi.

Through coaching, participants are offered space for reflection, growth, and deeper understanding as they explore how to apply these teachings and perspectives within their own leadership styles and relationships.

ʻŌLA co-founder and facilitator, Elena Farden highlights the meaningful ways our program blends traditional ʻike kūpuna with modern leadership practices. This approach supports participants in navigating both Western and ʻŌiwi worlds and developing the ability to translate across contexts and lead with adaptability, awareness, and cultural grounding in Hawaiʻi and beyond.
