The Coffin Beneath Rossi Street: A Forgotten Child, A Hidden Grave, and a Mystery That Finally Spoke

For years, a San Francisco family living on Rossi Street reported something they couldn’t explain, footsteps moving above them when no one was there. Not random noises, not creaks of an old house, but the distinct sound of a small child walking. Even contractors working on the home claimed to hear it. The family was certain of one thing: it wasn’t their kids.

The mystery remained unsolved until May 9, 2016.

During a renovation, workers made a discovery that would turn a neighborhood curiosity into a documented historical case. Beneath the home, they uncovered a small, metal coffin. Inside was the remarkably well-preserved body of a young girl, buried there for over a century.

The home, it turns out, had been built on land that once belonged to the Odd Fellows Cemetery, a large burial ground established in the 1800s. In the early 1900s, San Francisco relocated most cemeteries to Colma, California, but not every grave made the journey. This child had been left behind, hidden beneath what would later become a residential property.

After the discovery, volunteers and researchers took action. The girl was initially given the name “Miranda Eve” by those who cared for her remains. With the help of the Garden of Innocence, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring unidentified children, she received a proper burial at Green Lawn Cemetery in Colma.

Years later, DNA testing and genealogical research revealed her true identity: Edith Howard Cook, a two-year-old girl who died on October 13, 1876, most likely from marasmus, a form of severe malnutrition or illness that is treatable today.

Following the removal of the coffin, the homeowners reported that the unexplained footsteps stopped.

While stories like this often spark debate between history and the paranormal, the documented facts remain compelling: a forgotten grave, a child lost to time, and a discovery that restored her identity and dignity more than a century later.

There’s also a modern takeaway many overlook. In California, deaths on a property are only required to be disclosed if they occurred within the past three years. That means significant historical events, like this one, may never be revealed during a real estate transaction.

Walpurgis Night is not just a festival. It is a threshold.

Held on the night of April 30th, it sits between seasons, where winter fully releases its hold and something older, more volatile begins to rise. In Germanic and Central European folklore, this was the night witches gathered on high places like the Brocken, not for spectacle, but for alignment with forces that do not surface during ordinary time.

This is not light, decorative fire.

This is protective fire.

Bonfires were lit not just to celebrate, but to ward off what moved more freely that night spirits, wandering entities, and unseen influences that were believed to cross more easily into the human world. Noise was made. Bells were rung. Boundaries were reinforced.

Because the veil was not stable.

Walpurgisnacht sits opposite Beltane, yet the two are intertwined. Where Beltane celebrates fertility and life, Walpurgisnacht acknowledges the raw, unstable edge of that transition the moment where energy surges before it settles into form.

This is why it has always been tied to witchcraft.

Not because witches “gathered” in the way later stories suggest but because this night amplifies threshold energy.

It is a time for breaking patterns, cutting attachments, working with fire as transformation, not comfort standing between what was and what is about to become

It is not a night for passive ritual.

It responds to intention with force.

And it will reveal where you are still divided.

If you work with it, you do not approach gently.

You approach clearly.

Because Walpurgisnacht does not soften anything.

It sharpens.

It exposes.

And if you are willing to stand in it without stepping back it will show you exactly what needs to burn for you to move forward.
