Today, I was delighted to receive my first unsolicited message for The UnSchool Family Learning Center! It was an inquiry as to our location and services. While The UnSchool is still in the concept stage, I feel encouraged to forge ahead by the response that I've received so far. So, thank you!

With that said, as a homeschool mom myself, I thought I'd share a little glimpse into what our meager accommodations look like now.

Hint: It's a loft. In a townhouse.

Every day, I imagine the loft in which Jayce and I study just transforming into an expansive space built to accommodate the needs of homeschool families everywhere. A place where parents can find the resources they need to confidently teach their children in whatever manner they see fit. A place almost as common as the school.

If you have ideas about the types of resources that would assist you in taking the step towards homeschooling, it would be really helpful if you would share them with me.

It's been a great start to the warm season at The UnSchool Family Learning Center, LLC ! As an ongoing learning project, we are creating our garden. This complex project has brought us learning opportunities in the areas of science, math, spacial reasoning, research techniques, design, and the value of good, hard work.

As Jayce and I researched, planned, dug, and planted our garden, we talked about the food that was being sowed and all of the dishes we will cook together once the harvest begins.

With homegrown produce in hand, our learning will move into the kitchen where we will experience the life skill of cooking and all of the lessons that go with it.

What if there was a place that you could take your family that had huge working gardens and greenhouses that you could opt to work together? What if the vegetables grown there were used in the farm-to-table cafeteria that you could choose to help run? What if the vegetables were available to be brought home without question? Do you think it would elevate the typical behind-a-desk style of learning that most kids get as it pertains to earth science?

What if there was a place? What if it wasn't a School?

Sometimes, learning happens because you walk instead of drive. Today, Jayce and I discovered nature and learned to handle disappointment like a champ! A walk that we thought would end in a picnic lunch at a park with a pond ended in the discovery that the park is now a convenient store and the pond a fenced in feature of the newest housing development located in the back. So we went to Culver's and bragged about how bold of an adventure we had just walking around our own town and discovering places we never knew existed. Good times!

This might not seem like a kid's dish, but the coconut on that shrimp mixed with the pineapple? Sweet and crunchy! And Jayce LOVES edamame because it's nutty and so fun to eat!

What if it were possible for our kids to eat like this every day? What if it were possible because the veggies used were grown by them in the community garden located at the UnSchool?

Imagine a place where you could sign up to work in a garden that grew veggies used in the cafeteria. Working in the garden would open up all kinds of learning opportunities in the areas of science, teamwork and collaboration, and the origins of food, not to mention the pride your kid's would feel knowing that the entire UnSchool was only able to eat this way because of their efforts! Talk about motivation to eat their veggies!

What if there was a place? What if it wasn't a school?
