World Language Classroom Tips, Tools and Resources for Teaching Foreign Language Proficiency Bonjour, Hello, Hola, Buongiorno, Guten Tag, 你 好 !

I have compiled 25 years of world language teaching resources on this site. You can click through the categories to the right to browse activities and teaching ideas. In recent years I have been very moved by struggling communities and schools in Latin America and Haiti. In additional to volunteering in schools in Nicaragua and working to support curriculum development in Haiti, I am dedicated to providing school supplies for students who who are learning to read and write, hoping for a better life in the future. There are many teaching ideas and suggestions on this site and you are welcome to use or modify any of them. Many are free, but by purchasing my products through the Teachers Pay Teachers links you will not only get great teaching resources you will also help to provide school supplies (pencils, paper, books) for students at the Panama School in La Co**ha, Nicaragua. Merci, Thank You, Gracais, Grazie, Danke, 谢 谢 (Xiè Xie)!

Participation isn’t just who raises a hand or talks the most. It’s evidence of engagement with language + meaning.

So instead of asking: “How do I get more kids talking? Ask: “How do I design the lesson so participation is unavoidable?”

What happens in the first five minutes of your language class?

Those opening moments can easily get lost in attendance, announcements, settling in, and figuring out what comes next.

But an effective opening routine can do much more.

It can:
✔️ Reduce cognitive load
✔️ Establish clear expectations
✔️ Get students using the language immediately
✔️ Build proficiency from the moment class begins
✔️ Create more freedom for you to focus on teaching

The key is having a routine that works for learning—not simply a routine that gets students settled.

In Episode 265, I share several simple opening routines you can implement right away, how to adapt them across proficiency levels, and some common mistakes to avoid.

If you want your classes to start with purpose rather than transition time, this episode is for you.

Student motivation isn’t just about making class “fun.”

Ask instead:

--Are students thinking?
--Are they making choices?
--Are they using language meaningfully?
--Do they see a purpose for what they’re learning?

In this episode you'll learn 5 practices that will transform engagement and learning:

→ Content
→ Ownership & Agency
→ Cognitive Demand
→ Equitable Access
→ Formative Assessment

These practices can help us create classrooms where students feel confident, motivated, and valued, And, where learning is purposeful and relevant.

Last trip home before heading back to school on Monday. I’ve met and collaborated with so many interesting, insightful, dedicated, and often quite amusing, teachers this summer.

Nicaragua, Massachusetts, Nevada, Arizona, Virginia, North Carolina and Nebraska.

So inspired by the work of teachers and so thankful to each one for allowing me to be a part of their teaching journey. I love meeting my podcast listeners in person as well. That is so fun and incredibly motivating,

Ready for the 2026-2027 school year. This is year 30 for me. A little hard to believe. Here we go!
