Robotic Telescopes, Student Research and Education Conference The 4th Conference on Robotic Telescopes, Student Research and Education (RTSRE) is to be held in the Santa Barbara, California, June 21-23, 2022

The Remote Telescopes, Student Research and Education: Past, Present, Future conference will focus on the use of remotely-located, relatively small, optical robotic telescopes to support, promote and drive research undertaken by high school and undergraduate students for scientific research, while also addressing educational outcomes. The conference will aim to tie diverse strands into a coherent

story of where we have been (the past), where we are now (the present), and outline the pathways and challenges going forward (the future). In doing so, we endeavor to provide a synthesis of the relatively disconnected communities surrounding remote telescopes, scientific research, and astronomy education to provide a global picture of the field in its current state. Published, peer-reveiwed conference proceedings will feature invited and contributed papers, as well as poster summaries.

You've probably never heard of the Great Melbourne Telescope.

But you'll know all about its discoveries.

The telescope was built in Dublin in 1869 and shipped to Melbourne, where it was installed in the observatory at the Royal Botanic Gardens.

And after the observatory closed in 1944, the telescope was relocated to Canberra.

All together, it spent over 100 years it searching the southern skies.

It helped us understand dark matter, and took some of the first images of the moon.

And now – 150 years after it first arrived in Australia, and after surviving major damage in a bushfire – the Great Melbourne Telescope is being brought back to life by a dedicated team of Victorian volunteers.

If you visit ScienceWorks you can see the progress for yourself in the old pumping station.

You might even get a chance to see the team in action.
