A Homeschool Lesson Hidden in a Bouquet 🌻

I picked up this bouquet today, and it reminded me why I love homeschooling.

To most people, they’re just flowers. But in our house, they’re tomorrow’s lesson.

We’ll probably start by asking a simple question: Why do sunflowers always seem to face the sun?

That one question will lead us down all kinds of rabbit trails.

We’ll learn about plants, pollination, bees, and why flowers are so important. We’ll count petals, measure the biggest bloom, look up fun sunflower facts, and maybe even press a flower to save for later.

The younger kids might draw what they see. The older ones may research how sunflowers grow or write a paragraph about what they learned. Someone will probably end up asking if we can plant our own.

None of this was on a lesson plan.

That’s one of my favorite things about homeschooling. Learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a table with a stack of books. Sometimes it starts with something as ordinary as a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store.

Curiosity has a funny way of turning everyday moments into great learning opportunities.

And honestly, those are usually the lessons my kids remember the longest.

One thing I’ve learned as a homeschooling mom is that we don’t have to do everything ourselves.

When money is tight, we often assume outsourcing isn’t an option because we picture hiring a full-time housekeeper or nanny. But outsourcing can be much smaller than that.

Maybe it’s:
• Trading childcare with another homeschool mom so each of you gets a few uninterrupted hours.
• Hiring a responsible teen to play with the kids while you deep clean or take a walk.
• Asking a grandparent, church member, or trusted friend to read books, do crafts, or supervise outside play one afternoon.
• Enrolling the kids in a homeschool co-op, library program, or park day so you get a little breathing room.
• Having groceries delivered occasionally.
• Paying someone just once a month to deep clean bathrooms or change bed linens if that’s the task that always falls behind.

Sometimes outsourcing isn’t spending more money—it’s accepting help, trading skills, or letting someone else carry a small piece of the load.

And to this sweet mom…you have an 8-month-old who is breastfeeding, five children at home (plus your stepson every other week), and you’re homeschooling. That’s a tremendous amount for one person. Needing support doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human.

Homeschooling was never meant to be done in isolation. Build a village where you can, even if it’s just one small piece at a time. ❤️

To the Mom Who Thinks She Has to Do It All

Dear Homeschool Mom,

You don’t have to teach every subject.

You don’t have to organize every field trip.

You don’t have to know all the answers.

That’s one of the beautiful things about homeschool co-ops.

We share our strengths.

One mom teaches art.

Another teaches science.

Another organizes field trips.

Together, we create opportunities that would be difficult to do alone.

Community isn’t weakness.

It’s wisdom.
