A message from University of Iowa President Barb Wilson:

Dear parents and family members,

I am writing to you with a heavy heart.

Early today, a shooting in downtown Iowa City injured three University of Iowa students. Iowa City Police are investigating, with the full support of University of Iowa Police.

The university is in close communication with local law enforcement and will share more information as we are able. For now, I encourage you to rely on official university communications for updates.

While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them. I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.

Does your Hawkeye live in Mayflower residence hall? If so, this update is for YOU!

University Housing and Dining has begun transitioning Mayflower residence hall from heating to air conditioning as warmer temperatures moved in this week. Because the system cannot be switched back to heat once activated, we wanted to make you aware that cooler weather is expected this weekend and into next week and your students should plan accordingly. As a reminder, space heaters are not allowed in campus residence halls.

March Madness is in full swing and the Big Ten has left their mark! In case you missed it, the Iowa men's basketball team defeated the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in last night's Sweet 16 matchup. The Hawkeyes have advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time since 1987 and will face the University of Illinois Fighting Illini tomorrow (Saturday, Mar. 28) at 5:09 p.m. CT. We hope you can tune in from wherever you are to cheer on the Hawkeyes! 💛🏀🖤

Did you know today is One Day for Iowa!? This is the University of Iowa's 24-hour online giving day where Hawkeyes from all over come together to support what matters to them.

Each year, the Division of Student Life is able to support between 300 and 400 Hawkeyes with the Student Life Emergency Fund. Your gift could make a critical difference for many students facing unforeseen financial emergencies such as unexpected medical expenses, natural disaster impacts, safety related needs, costs associated with the death of a family member, and more.

Campus Facilities Update: earlier this week, the University of Iowa and ENGIE, Iowa's utility operator, began work to bring a new, larger water tower service to campus as part of the broader 10-year facilities plan.

Work is expected to last until March 13. During this time, water may be temporarily discolored. The water remains safe to drink and running water for a few minutes should clear it. All UI students received this update via email on February 26, but we wanted to make sure you all were in the loop!

Housing during spring break is free of charge for current residence hall students but requires registration. If your student is living on campus, please remind them to indicate if they plan to leave or remain in the residence halls for spring break by filling out the form due March 12th.
