Obituary for Dr. Lyn Horton Hammond
Lyn Horton Hammond, MD, 76, of Greer, SC passed away April 5, 2025 surrounded by family after a three-year battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Emogene Horton Hammond; brother Robert “Bobby”Hammond III; and son-in-law Kevin Jones.
He was born on December 30, 1948 in Greenville, SC at St. Francis Hospital and grew up one of four boys on Holmes Drive and Ivy Trail. He famously spent his summers as a teenager lifeguarding at area pools including Northside Gardens, Croftstone, Travelers Rest Community Pool, and Chetsu.
After graduating from Wade Hampton High School (1966) and Wofford College (BS Biology, 1970), he attended the Medical University of South Carolina. He returned to Greenville in 1974 to complete a three-year family practice residency with Greenville Hospital System. During medical school and residency, he met many wonderful people who would become lifelong colleagues and friends.
He devoted his professional life to practicing family medicine in Greenville at Pelham Family Practice which he founded in 1977, located at 410-B Pelham Road and later 25 Creekview Court. “The office” holds countless memories for so many. It was a place where people could come for healing, advice, consolation, and wise counsel. He celebrated retirement in the summer of 2021 and received the Order of the Silver Crescent, a South Carolina Governor’s award which recognized his lifetime of exemplary community contributions.
He was a man of many talents and had many interests. There was always a project to do or a way to help one of his kids. Any Saturday that presented an excuse to strap on a tool belt was sure to be a good day. He had a passion for working on and rebuilding cars and Jeeps. His capstone project was a Shelby Cobra kit car he completed in 2019. When he wasn’t driving the Cobra, he could often be seen riding his bike from Greenville to Travelers Rest and back on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, even after recovering from his 2022 stem cell transplant.
He could always be counted on to be at any game or event for his kids and later, his grandkids. Each year, his family took an annual beach trip where 22 of them shared one large house. On Sundays, he faithfully attended Brushy Creek Baptist Church for 35+ years where he served as a deacon. After church, his family met regularly for Sunday lunch, a time to gather over a meal and catch up with one another, something he enjoyed greatly.
He is survived by his loving wife Frankie Jones Hammond who cared for and valiantly fought beside him throughout his journey with Leukemia; children Christopher Hammond (Caryn), Heather Jones, Lindsey Strand (Jason) and Austin Hammond (Jessica); step-sons Luke Burgess and Andy Burgess (Amanda); grandchildren Madison Jones, Zachary Hammond, Isabella Jones, Meagan Hammond, Noah Jones, William Strand, Coral Hammond, Rose Hammond, Marian Strand, Leif Hammond, Emily Strand, Nova Hammond, Baby Strand (May 2025), and Jaidyn Burgess; brothers Richard Hammond (Brenda) and Greg Hammond (Tammy), and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Saeeda Chowdhury, Susan Funk, ACNP and the Prisma Health Cancer Institute team for their excellent care over the last three years.
The void of his passing is great. We treasure the memories and rest in the knowledge that he’s been made whole in the presence of Jesus.

Receiving of friends will be Sunday, April 13, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest.
A Funeral service will be held Monday, April 14, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Taylors followed by a graveside service at Mountain View Memorial Park.
