It was such a pleasure to see so many of you at the Advising Community Gathering this week! At the event, we announced our 2025 APAC Adviser of the Year, and we are pleased to now announce the recipient to the rest of the advising community!
~ 2025 Adviser of the Year: KAITLIN WOLF
Congratulations to Kaitlin! Kaitlin is an Academic Advisor in the Office of Student Academic Success at UW Bothell. Read about what Kaitlin's nominator said:
"Kaitlin is nearing her sixth year as an advisor at UW Bothell, and I could not be luckier to supervise her on my team. Over at UW Bothell, we have moved to centralized advising across campus, meaning those who previously worked as departmental advisers are now working in a new centralized advising unit like UAA advising, with new supervisors, teammates, students, and subject areas. Through this transition this autumn, Kaitlin has beautifully balanced her work, relationships across the school, and care for students.
As the former biology advisor myself, and Kaitlin being the former Health Studies advisor, we shared many students who were double majoring across our departments. Through these meetings with our double majors, I heard firsthand from students how much they loved working with Kaitlin and how supported she made them feel. The students that met with Kaitlin prior to meeting with me were already asking deeper questions about their academic journey, no doubt due to the intentional, kind and empowering way Kaitlin can connect with her students. Just last week one of Kaitlin’s students reached out to me to say the following about working with her:
“Hi folks, I have had the chance to seek advice from Kaitlin Wolf on several occasions as I transition into more regular schoolwork as a post-bacc. I have to relay to you that she is incredibly well prepared, knowledgeable. consultative, friendly, and competent in her arena. Hopefully, this recommendation serves as another point of reference in justifying any recognitions or promotions that may be necessary to keep her around!”
One of the strengths that makes Kaitlin so amazing as an adviser is her documentation and resource development for students. Her Canvas resource site for students is incredibly comprehensive, regularly maintained, and widely used by Health Studies students. Kaitlin’s focus on information sharing and connecting students with resources is undoubtedly reducing inequities for students with varying levels of “prerequisite university knowledge”. Kaitlin’s Canvas site and resources are serving as a model for other advisers in our new unit who have not had the capacity or encouragement to develop similar tools for their former majors/programs.
Unsurprisingly to those who have worked in advising, much of the work Kaitlin does to support her students is invisible. It would bring me so much joy to see Kaitlin recognized for her deep care for students in a very tangible way!"

A bit out of order, but bear with me! Please join us in congratulating WHIT FRALEIGH as our April 2025 APAC Adviser of the Month!
Whit is an Academic Counselor in the Department of Bioengineering at UW Seattle. Whit's nominator had this to say:
"Whit serves as the sole advisor for bioengineering undergraduates and is genuinely beloved by the students. Since joining the department, Whit has hit the ground running and transformed the department into a more inclusive, intentional, and welcoming space for all. Not only do the students appreciate Whit’s efforts, but the faculty and administrators hold them in high regard as well. In the short time they have been with the department, Whit has established more inclusive and equitable policies for the admissions and application process, resulting in the most diverse and successful cohorts the department has ever seen. Additionally, they have cultivated strong relationships with community colleges, creating equivalency guides that empower community college advisors to better assist students interested in transferring to UW and applying to the bioengineering department."
We are so happy to be able to recognize Whit! Please see below to learn more about Whit.
• How long have you been on campus?
I earned my master’s degree at the UW in the College of Education in 2013, then spent some time working in higher education in Western Massachusetts and the Bay Area. I returned to the UW as a graduate student in 2019 and have been working on campus supporting students ever since!
• What’s your favorite thing about UW?
The UW community! I’ve met some of the most intellectually curious, creative, kind, and compassionate students, staff, and faculty throughout my time on campus.
• What do you enjoy doing when you're not on campus or working?
I love going to support local Seattle sports teams – especially women’s sports (go Reign and Storm!), and I play recreational soccer as part of the Rain City Soccer Club. When I’m at home, I enjoy watching reality TV with my spouse and playing with our two cats.
• Where is your favorite place to eat around campus?
It’s a tie between Korean Tofu House and Sizzle & Crunch. I truly can’t pick just one.

Please join us in congratulating SARAH YOUNG as our May 2025 APAC Adviser of the Month!
Sarah is an Academic Advisor in the School of Urban Studies at UW Tacoma. Sarah's nominator had this to say:
"I am nominating Sarah Young for the APAC Advisor of the Month because of the top-notch advising she provides within the School of Urban Studies here at UW Tacoma. She truly does it all! From admissions and onboarding of undergraduate and graduate students, academic advising, troubleshooting, and assisting the school at-large with initiatives and events I cannot think of a part that she does not play an important role in. Sarah is also a fantastic collaborator; she regularly partners with other schools and programs on campus to advance important programs and process changes as well as serves in a leadership role in AALC (Academic Advising Leadership Council) here at UW Tacoma where she works on advocating the needs of academic advising campus-wide. She is also a phenomenal student-centered support where she is always available to help or lend a listening ear. As a fellow colleague I am always impressed with her professionalism, advocacy, kindness, and down-to-earth approach to her work. She would be a great nominee for his honor!"
We are so happy to be able to recognize Sarah! Please see below to learn more about Sarah.
• How long have you been on campus?
I keep coming back! I started my time at UWT in 2007 as an AmeriCorps member in what was then called the Diversity Resource Center, running a mentoring program for first-gen, low-income students. The goal was to increase retention in these populations by creating a mentoring relationship between current UWT students and high schoolers in the local TRiO program. The next year I came back as a student in the Urban Studies program, graduating in 2010. Five years later I returned to work as a recruiter for the Urban Studies program, a role that evolved to eventually include advising at the undergrad and grad levels. In 2018 I left to have my son, and returned in 2023 when he entered kindergarten.
• What are some exciting projects you've recently completed or are currently working on?
I have been a part of UWT’s Academic Advising Leadership Council for the last 3 years. It has been a really great experience to work with other advisors across campus on issues that impact us all. The group is relatively new, but our momentum is building, and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow next year and beyond.
• What is the best advice you've ever been given?
If you’re going through something, keep going – the only way out is through.
• What’s your favorite thing about UW?
I love the students I work with at UWT, and especially in the School of Urban Studies. I get to work with such a diverse range of people with such a variety of life experiences – 19-year-old Running Start students getting close to graduation, working moms making mid-career changes, veterans getting the most out of their benefits, and so many more unique stories. I am honored to be a part of their journey to careers making our world a better, more equitable, more thriving place.
• What do you enjoy doing when you're not on campus or working?
I love to travel. I’ve been to many countries in Europe and Asia, including Bhutan, China, Italy, and more. I also love being close to home, especially in the summertime when I can paddleboard, sail, run, and anything else I can do to spend time outside.

Better late than never! Please join us in congratulating Heran Kidane, Tess Matsukawa, Danafe Matusalem, and Karen Sanchez as our March 2025 APAC Advisers of the Month!
Heran, Tess, Danafe, and Karen are the advising team for the Public Health Global Health (PH-GH) major at UW Seattle. Their nominator had this to say: "While the Academic Services Director was on parental leave for 6 months, the PH-GH Advisers managed advising a 300 student cohort through a new curriculum that involved intensive enrollment management to ensure all students had the opportunity to complete their major requirements within a 2 year time frame. They implemented new communication strategies during a very full time to reach both incoming major students and the students matriculated into the outgoing curriculum. We've heard so much praise from how well the advising team did during this time frame and have had a smooth transition into the winter quarter!"
We are so happy to be able to recognize the PH-GH Advising Team! Please see below to learn more about them.
Questions:
• Adviser or advisor?
• How long have you been on campus?
• What are some exciting projects you just completed or are currently working on?
• What is the best advice you have ever been given (work or personal)?
• What is your favorite thing about UW?
• What do you enjoy doing when you are not on campus/working?
• Where is your favorite place to eat around campus?
• Most recent favorite book, show, movie, or podcast?
- HERAN -
• ~technically~ advisor
• On campus for 3.5 years!
• Best advice: Why stand when you can sit? Why sit when you can lay down?
• Fave UW thing: The trees, soooooo many beautiful wonderful trees!
• I love to practice and teach yoga!
• Saigon Deli - chicken banh mi with egg, yummmm
• Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
- TESS -
• advisor
• On campus for 5.5 years
• Fave UW thing: I love the different gardens on campus. I enjoy going on walks through them during my lunch.
• I enjoy making art with my friends, spending time with my cat, and biking
• Xi’an Noodles
• Right now, my favorite show is Severance
- DANAFE -
• Adviser – I like that this spelling of the word has “advise” in it which is what we do in this profession.
• On campus for 11 years! I have been on campus since I was an undergraduate student. It is meaningful (and sometimes still surprising) to me that I have the opportunity to continue to grow as an alum and professional at the same university and major that I graduated from.
• Exciting project: embedding professional development content into the new PH-GH curriculum. With my training as a Certified Dependable Strengths Facilitator that I received in Aut24, I lead the creation and facilitation of four Dependable Strengths Workshop Class Sessions for the new SPH 391: Public Health Service Learning I course in the PH-GH Purple Curriculum with homework assignments and class activities in Win25. I also collaborate on the Dependable Strengths Workshop Class Sessions for SPH 396: Intensive Public Health Service Learning and career development sessions such as interviewing and cover letters in SPH 392: Public Health Service Learning II for Spr25.
• Best advice: Go where your light can shine the brightest and be embraced; find your chosen family.
Always be gracious, compassionate, and kind to yourself. You are worthy and enough to receive the same kindness, care, and time that you give to others. Be the person you wish you had when you were younger for yourself now.
Rest is essential. Take the break, use the sick time, take vacation time (even if you are not going to a “vacation spot”), take a nap, go to sleep, etc..
You are on your own path and timeline. It is hard to stop, but you really do not need to compare yourself with others.
Your voice matters and is unique to you. Don’t diminish it even if others judge it harshly or don’t listen.
• Spending time with my family and friends, reading, writing, watching shows/movies/videos, going on boba dates, and karaoke!
• On the Ave: Little Thai, Sizzle & Crunch, Korean Tofu House
At UVillage: Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, Mr. West, Frankie & Jo’s
• Show: Abbott Elementary - I binged it last month and am caught up now! Books (Listed by genre):
Contemporary Romance: The Kiss Quotient Series by Helen Hoang and Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert – The next book on my TBR (To Be Read) List is the second book in the Brown Sisters Series!
Memoir: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
Self-Help: Permission to Come Home: Reclaiming Mental Health as Asian Americans by Jenny Wang, PhD.
- KAREN -
• I have to go with adviser :-)
• As an adviser, over 3 years but I also went to UW as an undergrad, so technically 6 years on campus.
• Our application to the major recently closed so we are in the midst of reviewing applications for Autumn entry!
• Best advice: Don’t compare yourself to where others are because everyone is on their own timeline and journey. As someone who transferred to the UW during undergrad and graduated during the pandemic, I have found comfort and strength in this whenever I struggle with imposter syndrome.
• I have been taking online courses at my community college over the past year and look forward to picking that back up in the summer after this quarter. I’ve also been trying to learn a new instrument and am in the process of learning to play the violin!
• Can’t go wrong with Saigon Deli (love their tofu banh mi!), Molly Moon’s in U-Village, and if you’re open to going a little further off campus, Seattle Samosa and Zary Bakery on 65th (it’s a few short blocks off of the 372 bus route).
• When commuting to work, I listen to a lot of podcasts with some of my go-to’s being: Radio Lab, Invisibilia, Ologies, On the Media, and Code Switch.

Please join us in congratulating HUGO GARCIA VILLA as our February 2025 APAC Adviser of the Month!
Hugo is the Manager of Leadership Without Borders in the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center at UW Seattle. Hugo's nominator had this to say:
"Leadership Without Borders (LWB) is unique -- one of the only centers in the PNW that serves as a resource for students who are undocumented. Hugo supports about 700 students who are undocumented through programming, advising, and resource sharing. The role really doesn't have a peer...Hugo is positioned in a space between legal advice, academic advice, and mentorship. I've relied on his expertise for student situations in the past. He also conducts a fabulous UndocuAlly training, which I recently attended again after several years. Not only had the content been substantially refreshed and updated, I want to name the excellence in creating such an in-depth opportunity for professional development and resource sharing for folks across the university. It's clear to me that Hugo leads with heart, creativity, and resourcefulness. He centers diverse stories and experiences and fosters opportunity for learning and vulnerability in a respectful and curiosity-fueled environment. For embodying his dual roles to kindle the flame for UW Undocu students and to share the light with the larger UW community, I think he's well-deserving of advisor of the month. Having a resource in LWB and Hugo makes me proud to work here."
We are so happy to be able to recognize Hugo! Please see below to learn more about Hugo.

• How long have you been on campus?
I've been fortunate to work at the University of Washington for 6 years.
• What are some exciting projects you've recently completed or are currently working on?
I'm really excited for Undocu Week in March 2025! It's a weeklong series of events that will empower our student community through workshops, panels, storytelling, and more. It's all about raising awareness and providing support.
• What is the best advice you've ever been given?
"What if it turns out better than you imagined?" It's a simple yet powerful reminder to stay open to the unexpected and embrace possibilities.
• What’s your favorite thing about UW?
The beautiful campus, hands down. From the stunning cherry blossoms in spring to the awe-inspiring view of Mt. Rainier in the distance, there’s always something breathtaking to take in.
• What do you enjoy doing when you're not on campus or working?
I’m in my "girl dad" era, so a lot of my free time revolves around that! When I do have time for myself, you can usually find me hiking the incredible Pacific Northwest trails or out on the water, bass fishing.
• Where's your favorite place to eat around campus?
Sizzle Crunch—can't get enough of their delicious offerings!
• What’s your most recent favorite book, show, movie, or podcast?
Book: Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter
Movie: American Primeval
Podcast: All There Is by Anderson Cooper

Please join us in congratulating JADE COX, JEANNY MAI, & BRENNA MULVANY as our January 2025 APAC Advisers of the Month!
Jade, Jeanny, and Brenna are the Student Services Team in the Department of Physics at UW Seattle. Their nominator had this to say:
"The Physics Student Services team has been solid for two years and their impact has been already recognized by their own department in receiving the 2024 Distinguished Staff Award.
Jade is the Introductory Sequence Coordinator who supports thousands of undergrads, several professors, and dozens of graduate and undergraduate student TAs each year. Jade receives hundreds of emails when registration is open and calmly assists students who are panicked that their section is full. She keeps track of students wishing to enter a section on her many overload lists and eventually these students receive a seat. I am honestly not sure how she manages the volume of emails and keeps her overload lists straight. While a fair number of these students leave for other majors, she treats all of them equally with care. She coordinates with DRS (Disability Resource Services) to ensure that students who have accommodations will have a test waiting for them. While Jade has been in this role, she has been instrumental on a few new processes, such as the Day One textbook and also GradeScope. She took on each new process with ease.
Brenna has shown competence, professionalism and congeniality from the beginning. Her previous work experience included various levels of interactions (assisting, instructing) with students of younger ages but nothing quite like advising college-aged students in STEM. She took on this responsibility methodically. Since she has been in this position, I have noticed her confidence level rise and her relationships with students has flourished with several students seeking advice specifically from her. Brenna has also taken on more job responsibilities, such as owning our summer REU (Research Experience for Undergrads) program, filling in for our Introductory Sequence Coordinator, and providing advising for another department which is short-staffed.
After an established career in graduate level advising, Jeanny made the switch to the Physics Department to become an undergraduate advisor and learn more about the largest population on the UW campus. In that time, she quickly showed herself as a colleague who enjoys helping students and others in a fun and positive way. As the Senior Counselor, she has provided training to her colleagues and allowed them space to grow into their positions. She serves as the main contact for anyone seeking the Physics Department to attend or represent at events for undergraduate students and has served on campus-wide committees (A&O Math and Science Interest Summer Sessions and other focus groups centering on the undergraduate advising experience).
It would be difficult to choose just one member of the Physics Student Services team to nominate. These three individuals work together as a collective team of leaders. They support and raise each other up. They enhance the student experience by seeking to anticipate and improve processes that smooth the way for our undergraduates. Jade works closely with the Physics Introductory Teaching Committee to ensure that students are registered, have access to the texts, and accommodations for their exams and classroom attendances. Brenna and Jeanny regularly attend training sessions, workshops, and actively network with fellow advisors along the way, in order to define and hone their advising skills with this ever-changing population of students in a holistic and empathetic way. Students have expressed the need for more connection and outreach; this team attends SPS (Society of Physics Student) activities, creates events to build community and share resources (and eat lunch!), and above all else show the students that they are seen; belong here, and can graduate the UW with their Physics degree!"

We are so happy to be able to recognize the Physics Student Services Team! Please see below to learn more about Jade, Jeanny, and Brenna.
