The Oberlin Conservatory of Music's summer Trumpet Workshop is designed for high school, college, professional, and amateur trumpet players and teachers who want to invest intensive time in trumpet fundamentals, solo trumpet playing, and pedagogical skills. The daily program is designed to be sufficiently flexible to accommodate the interests of the individual participants. Each day will begin wit
h a group warm-up that will include the lip buzzing and mouthpiece concepts made famous by the late James Stamp and will continue on to include embouchure training that can be included in a trumpet warm-up routine. There will be a daily European-style masterclass given by Roy Poper and or Arto Hoornweg that will cover specific technical and musical issues, followed by participant performances and coaching by the instructors. Participants will have ample opportunity for practice, individual and group coaching sessions, and those who wish may participate in recitals. James Howsmon, professor of collaborative piano at the conservatory, will be available to play for masterclasses and performances. Each year, Ken Larson (Interlochen Arts Academy; Larson BrassWerks) leads a class on equipment. Past workshops have featured performances and masterclasses by guest artists Jack Sutte (Cleveland Orchestra), Michael Davis (Los Angeles Freelance), and Joel Brennan (University of Melbourne Conservatorium).
