The Inya Institute (Yangon), Cornell Universityโ€™s Southeast Asia Program (SEAP), TheHILLS Myanmar (THM) & its Chin State Academic Research Network, and Kachinland Research Centre (KRC) invite scholars and students to submit original research papers and/or panels covering any area of Myanmarโ€™s borders with China, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, and India.

Myanmarโ€™s multilayered crisis is profoundly reshaping the socio-economic and geo-political dynamics of the countryโ€™s borderlands, regions that have evolved into spaces of exchange, negotiation, and collaboration across geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. The emergence of these spaces has been uneven, unfolding under stringent administrative control and persistent insecurity and marked by fluctuating intensity and periodic pushback from central authorities. Yet, the potential of borderlands to provide local and trans-local communities and networks with opportunities to shape the countryโ€™s future remains tremendous.

The conferenceโ€™s focus on interconnectedness highlights how inclusive learning and dialogue, local and trans-local community engagement, and recognition of our interdependence with the natural environment can further strengthen borderland dynamics. It broadens the conversation on borderland issues beyond narrow framings and encourages dialogue across communities to discuss shared challenges and aspirations.

We welcome submissions addressing topics including:

๐Ÿ”ธ borderland dynamics and their local and trans-local communities
๐Ÿ”ธ networks and partnerships emerging across ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries
๐Ÿ”ธ communities, networks, and trade across borders
๐Ÿ”ธ natural resources and challenges to environmental protection in borderlands
๐Ÿ”ธ legal and illegal border migration
๐Ÿ”ธ humanitarian relief to refugees and public health in borderlands
๐Ÿ”ธ border regimes and governance
๐Ÿ”ธ infrastructure(s), illicit economies, and activities
๐Ÿ”ธ non-human mobility in borderlands
๐Ÿ”ธ formal and non-formal education in borderlands
๐Ÿ”ธ other themes related to Myanmarโ€™s borderlands

We also welcome book presentations, movie presentations, and roundtables.

To preserve the confidentiality of presenters, the conference program will not circulate beyond registered participants. Presenters will follow the Chatham House Rule.

The conference will be held entirely online. Due to the time difference between Myanmar and the U.S., panels will take place in the evening for presenters based in Myanmar, Thailand, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, and in the morning for those located in the U.S.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Looking for meaningful work or a way to support community-led research?
Weโ€™ve just opened new research positions and fellowships, and there are also mentorship opportunities for those whoโ€™d like to support the next generation of researchers from Chin State.

Here's a bit more about who we are, what we do, and how to get involved:

For years, TheHILLS Myanmar (THM) has been working steadily to support strong, grounded research and education, shaped by real-life experience and deep local knowledge.

We are a non-partisan, non-political, research-based non-profit focused on education, policy, and de-colonial knowledge. Our work covers the full education journey: from helping children access school to supporting university-level research, leadership, and supporting evidence based policy making.

We run fellowships, mentorships, training, and research & policy work. One of our long-standing programmes is the Chin State Academic Research Network (CSARN), which brings together researchers with deep ties to their communities.

๐ŸŒ We connect local knowledge with global conversations, and we work with people and institutions from many different backgrounds. We build bridges through our daily work, in how we collaborate, form partnerships, and stay present in the communities and contexts we care about.
