Onuh, the Enigmatic Pedagogue!
Late Mr.Onuh Mgbo Celestine was my Teacher on indefinite subjects. As a JSS student, I never could say he taught me Mathematics alone because he also swept Integrated Science, English and even Igbo into my head whether I liked it or not. He was a jack of all trade in the classroom and master of all. Mr Onuh Mgbo would always call me by my father’s name “Ogbozo, bia n’ibie”. Meaning, Ogbozo, come here. A formula he used to chastise and cuddle stubborn students.
I was always found majorly in two places; the hostel or Mkpurukem ukpa forest. The classroom to me then was a place of time waste. So i was always not around when looked for by Mr.Onuh in the classroom. At a point, he took it upon himself to father me. How he knew the address of my Dad’s Supermarket and our home then is still perplexing. At this point, he started sending the signal of my anti-learner behaviour of not always in the class to my Dad and also getting messages from home for me as to create teacher-student familiarity. As a corrective measure, Mr.Onuh opened an attendance register for me in his office where I signed twice daily; one after morning assembly and next after the school was over. How he was paid by my parents in the caretaking and after school tutorials he organized on afternoon basis is a story for another day. Mr Onuh was a workaholic as he taught any subject with ease in any empty class he entered, after he must have covered his own subjects for his assigned classes. He never believed any person who passed through his tutelage would not become a Medical Doctor or an Engineer. When he looks at you and sees a brighter future in you, he will pick you wholly and give you cogent concentration until you are good to go to any level of academic competition. Even those who eventually went into businesses and other field he never advocated still have their stories to tell in parity with the regimented benevolence of Mr.Onuh towards their present day career and livelihood.
What any student would not want to dream of back then was to be angrily anchored on the waist region by Mr.Onuh. He had a palm that looked like that of Ijele masquerade. So wide as the blade of a standing fan. He was so strong that his grip on your belt would lift one of your legs ½ yard above the ground, letting the remnant of your legs dangle at the mercy of his strokes of cane all over your head and back. Those he did to call back his lost sheep. I never wanted such style of callback, so anytime I fell into his trap; I prayed for a confiscation of my articles as to be given the alternative of carrying buckets to “Why Worry” stream in a number of iterations for that always gave me a space to while away time foolishly along the Staff quarters.
One day in my SS1, he called me and said “You must work towards being a Mechanical Engineer, but my problem with you is that you don’t know Physics. Moherigi, Moheegi (whether you like it or not), I will break your score and put Abbot into it and you will become a professional in Physics.” Jokingly, I accepted not knowing that he meant all he said. Little by little, we started Physics classes and he fulfilled his words by making me one of the bests in his Physics Class; though not a Mechanical Engineer but a Computer Scientist. Truly, as a comfortable child who never lacked anything when growing up,i had no future plan for myself until i realized later that i was too good in Physics and Mathematics at a GCE attempt he arranged, which contributed to my choice of course of study.
In all SSS classes, Mr.Onuh taught Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and all courses that would take students to the Laboratory for Practical displays. He did all these without getting tired or angered by any external factor not contributing to his goal of making life-changing impact on his students. This strange strength of pedagogy alone made him enigmatic as his kind till date remains unprecedented in the history of classroom activities.
Farewell Great Teacher, Farewell Prof.

AN ODE TO OUR PELICAN... Prof CEO Onuh..By Dr Christian Oko

A teacher per excellom!
You "mathsed" us, and made us Scientists.
We never knew the sacrifices you offered.
Like the Pelican, we suckled as children,
Until you fell at the foot of your white board.

For the shouts and "insomnia" we caused you,
The sacrifice of teaching humorously all day;
Your labours of pursuing us unto excellence,
Even the pains of marking our books all night,
We remember to shout "Thank you Prof!"

You drummed Science through our hard skulls,
You made learning fun with jokes,
You motivated us all, even the recalcitrant.
And for the discipline your strokes instilled,
We muster a grateful, "Jookwa Sir"

You inspired us unto greatness,
We never knew you will not see us boom,
You planted seeds and watered them all,
We wish you stayed to enjoy our fruits,
Now, your forest trees whistle "Onuh Mgbo".

You were always strong and agile,
Applied ever strategy to inspire all,
And emptied yourself to fill our brains.
As we continue sow those seeds of greatness,
We earnestly pray: "God bless your soul".

Was Senior Maths and Science Teacher Government Secondary School Afikpo, for fifteen years.

RIP Prof...
Looking forward to a Memorial day in your honour.

U can share your testimonies, let's celebrate him.
