Ruby Duncan Elementary School is heartbroken to share the passing of Las Vegas civil rights legend and our school namesake, Ruby Duncan.
Duncan was born in 1932, the daughter of sharecroppers, and came to Clark County in the early 1950s to work in the service industry. Over time, Duncan became an advocate on many fronts, earning national recognition for her work on food assistance and medical care for women and children. She was instrumental in establishing the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women (WIC) to provide nutrition to low-income women and children.
Ruby Duncan Elementary School was named in her honor in 2010. Duncan spent significant time at the school talking with students about the importance of education, reading, and using their voice to stand up for what they believe in. Her passion for helping disadvantaged families and fierce advocacy for her community will long be remembered and cherished.

Get ready to bring the energy next week! We are officially kicking off Spirit Week to honor our incredible military-connected students for Month of the Military Child (MOMC)! It’s time to show these resilient rockstars how much we appreciate their strength and sacrifice.
Here is the big date you need to know: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15: NEVADA PURPLE UP DAY. This is the official Day of the Military Child! We want to see a total "Purple Out" at school. Whether it’s a purple shirt, purple socks, or a purple tutu, wear it proud. Why Purple? It’s the color that symbolizes all branches of the military coming together.
Let’s make some noise and show our military families that this community has their backs all week long!
