Happy first day of Women’s History Month!

This week, I’m excited to share my conversation with Mikal Hicks Black, D.O, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in metro Philly. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Hicks-Black during one of my 3rd year rotations. My time spent on her service was life changing and perspective shifting. Dr. Hicks-Black is one of the best clinicians I've had the joy of spending time with. She loves her work and serves in a way that honors the unique experiences of her kids.

As a lead clinician, Dr. Hicks-Black covers various inpatient units within the hospital where she manages patients from diverse backgrounds with intricate trauma narratives and complex psychopathology. She genuinely feels she turned her purpose into passion, and feels blessed to work in communion with the families and children that walk her units.

New week, new heat!

I was introduced to Dr. Jasmin Harpe () through her OpEd in the titled “Why I Will Not Be Attending My Medical Residency Graduation”. When I started reading I was taken by her courage, vulnerability and the common thread that many trainees of color experience. Before I finished reading the article I knew that I wanted to chat with Dr. Harpe!

In our conversation we talk about her thought process when writing, how her background in public health has informed her approach to patient care, the transition into fellowship and what she’s listening to right now.

About Dr. Harpe: Dr. Jasmin Marie Harpe was born on the East Coast, graduated from high school in California, and came back East for college. She earner a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University, a master’s in public health at Yale, and attended Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Dr. Harpe stayed at Weill Cornell Medicine to complete her residency at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She combined her passion for neurology, public health advocacy, and research during residency by exploring the relationship between fertility treatment and headaches and has continued investigating this topic during her fellowship. She is currently a Clinical Fellow in Headache Medicine for the 2021-2022 academic year, and is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

New Year, new episodes! Happy New Year and Happy Black History Month!!

What better time to launch new episodes of a platform dripping with Black history than in Black History Month! I’m excited to share new conversations with you all and the stories of some dope men and women who are the future of medicine.

Today, I’m kicking of season 3 with Dr. Brian Nwannunu, MD,MS(.Brian) a newly minted Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction. Dr. Nwannunu earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Morehouse College, his master’s degree in Physiology from Georgetown University, and he completed his medical education at Howard University. After medical school, he went on to complete his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at John Peter Smith Health Network and fellowship training in adult reconstruction at Baylor College of Medicine.

Brian is a member of multiple medical societies and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Outside of medicine Brian enjoys basketball, weight training, outdoor activities, attending art and music festivals, traveling, world news, and reading.

I loved his energy, perspective and overall joy of life. He diligently chases his goals and continues to be a beacon of light!

Dedicated. This is what my quarantine dedicated board study time looked like last year in my living room/office, complete with a wall of my notes (it looked like a crazy person lived there). What a difference a year and a refreshed mindset makes. I’m approaching this time with a perspective of of peace, claiming victory over these exams and a desire to learn from my mistakes daily.

The days are still repetitive and mundane, daily exercise, questions, review and repeat, but my perspective is different. Less dread and more joy.

Shoutout to all of my friends and any other med student in the midst of board study. We got this! Don’t let UWorld haze the joy out of you. Above all, make yourself proud.

Yesterday, I received the first dose of the Moderna COVID Vaccine. This moment felt like history. Admittedly, I was hesitant. The healthcare system has been planting and harvesting seeds of mistrust for decades and centuries. Black people have been experimented on, our bodies have been brutalized, our concerns are overlooks and everything in between . I understand the fear and hesitation. I felt it too.

To address my hesitation head on, I spent time reading through the data and went directly to the source, , for answers. The more my knowledge base grew, the more confident I felt about taking this vaccine. As a physician in training, it’s part of my responsibility to learn and share the facts.

If you’re fearful, I encourage you log of social and combat the barrage of misinformation with learning facts. Reach out to someone you trust who received the vaccine.

I LOVE US. I want us to live. COVID is infecting and killing Black, brown and indigenous people at disproportionately high rates. This vaccine is a step forward in us finally being able to say . I took this for us and hope that it encourages others to do the same.

Shared this on my personal IG, sharing here in hopes that we take time to reflect on how much progress we’ve made!!

On Friday, I along with many of my colleagues and friends took our final Shelf/COMAT exam (our end of rotation exams) of 2020. I’m proud of us. I’m proud of myself.

To my fellow 3rd years, congrats on making it this far; seven months (a few more for some) of specialty speed dating. Congrats on getting up early everyday to make it to the hospital before sign-out at 6:30. Congrats on making it through months of staying up late to study after 12+ hours of being “on” so you’d be sharp the next morning. Well done, advocating for your patient during rounds.

Congrats on surviving a tumultuous board season wrought with last minute cancellations, rescheduling woes and seemingly never ending stress. To my friends still in the board prep mode because 2020 just won’t let us cook 🥴, you’ve got this!! Keep pressing, keep being focused and rest when you need to. You’re almost there!!

To every single Med student making it through this year on zoom lectures, virtual residency interviews and everything in between, you’re a beast in your own right. Give yourself the grace you give others; and when things get rough lean on support and rest (naps work😎).

Enjoy this break y’all, we’ve earned it!! No rushing tomorrow morning.
