Mauritania's most prominent antislavery activist, Biram Dah Abeid, is visiting Columbus this week from the 9th (Thursday) through the 13th (following Monday).
The Columbus chapter of his abolitionist organization (IRA) is hoping that his upcoming visit will provide opportunities to establish contacts with city leaders, statehouse leaders, as well as the scholarly community at Ohio State. He will be on campus Thursday 3/9 from at the Hale Center, room 110B, from noon - one. All are welcome.

Visiting Professor Shabaan Mlacha, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Finance and Administration at the University of Dodoma will discuss the development of the University and the transformation of the city of Dodoma since it became the new Tanzanian capital city. Partnerships between private enterprise, NGOs, and international higher education institutions, including OSU, are a vital part of this development.

[Alec G. Hargreaves]Home to the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, France occupies a key position in the spillover into the West of current conflicts in the Middle East. Alec G. Hargreaves explores the complex underpinnings of this dynamic, focused on unresolved tensions in French policy towards immigrant minorities of Arab and Muslim heritage. Professor emeritus at Florida State University, Hargreaves was Ada Belle Winthrop-King Professor of French and director of the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies. A specialist on political, cultural and media aspects of post-colonial minorities in France, he is the author and editor of numerous books, the most recent of which are Transnational French Studies: Postcolonialism and Littérature-monde (Liverpool, 2011); Politics and Religion in France and the United States (Lexington, 2007); Multi-Ethnic France: Immigration, Politics, Culture and Society (Routledge, 2nd ed. 2007); Memory, Empire, and Postcolonialism: Legacies of French Colonialism (Lexington, 2005); and Memory, Empire and Postcolonialism (Lexington, 2005).

[Ebola and the Political Economy of Health Care in Sub-Saharan Africa]

The recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has claimed nearly 1900 lives, with many more projected losses in the coming months. The epidemic is unprecedented in size, complexity and the strain imposed on health systems. Much of the failure to contain the spread of Ebola is due to lack of investment in basic health infrastructure. This forum will explore the political and economic causes of poor health infrastructure in many Sub-Saharan African countries, including those directly impacted by Ebola. It will also consider challenges to health-seeking behavior in resource-poor contexts. The forum brings together scholars from several disciplines whose remarks will initiate the discussion forum.

· Kim Yi Dionne is an assistant professor of government at Smith College. Professor Dionne studies, among other things, the politics surrounding health (particularly HIV/AIDS) in Africa. She has been very visible in the media coverage of Ebola.

· Willa Friedman is an assistant professor of economics at the University of Houston. Part of her research focus is on (often unintended) behavioral changes in response to health systems.

· Marcel Yotebieng is an assistant professor of epidemiology in the OSU College of Public Health who works on infectious diseases and has an interest in health-seeking behavior at the micro level.
