We discussed different ways in which Salvador Dali applied S.C.A.M.P.E.R. (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, eliminate, reverse) techniques to create surrealism. Students were to eliminate the iris of the eye and replace it with something else in order to create something surreal.

Featured Student Artists 02/01/2019

We will soon have a featured artist bulletin that will be posted in the school hallway and in this online album. The Featured Artist Bulletin is to honor students who create beyond the classroom and to inspire others to do the same. If your student is chosen as a featured artist, they will be sent home with a questionnaire so we can get to know more about who they are as an artist.

During Hispanic Heritage month we discussed the artworks of three contemporary Hispanic artists. If your student is in grades 3-6, ask them about the message behind this piece by Natalia Anciso:

k-6 Observational Plant Studies

We discussed how the brain works while we draw and how drawing from observation is more accurate than drawing from memory. Our minds prefer to draw from memory because it is how we perceive the world visually every day. We must use a new part of our brain to draw from observation. Students were to observe and draw the details they saw in different plants sitting at their table. It may seem easy but it is a big challenge that takes a lifetime of practice to perfect. Observational drawing is one of the fundamental practices in improving technical art skills.

Movement in the classroom for kinesthetic learners | DonorsChoose.org project by Mrs. Leonard 18/10/2018

The majority of this donation will go towards a class set of sensory chair bands. The bands wrap around the foot of the chair for students to bounce their feet as they work at their desk. This sensory outlet is ideal for students with ADHD, autism, sensory processing disorders, and kinesthetic learners.

Kinesthetic and tactile learners have trouble sitting still and lose interest quickly without the ability to move while they work.
I have several students who run around the classroom, bounce in their chair, tap, wiggle, crawl under tables, and do anything they can to get their energy out. I have a small basket with 3-4 sensory toys for some students. The sensory toys work great while I am giving instructions, reading a book, or when we have class discussions. However, when it is time to do work with paper and pencil, I often have to take the toy away so they can use their hands to get their work done. The chair bands will allow students to get their energy out by bouncing their feet on the band as they use their hands on their work.

Add the promo code RIPPLE at checkout and their donations will be doubled up to $50 for the next 7 days.

Enrich Our Art Room With Reading Resources! | DonorsChoose.org project by Mrs. Leonard 14/09/2018

We only need $15 to fulfill our goal for the donors choose reading resources!

With your donation, I can enrich our art room with culture and creative concepts through reading resources. I will engage students by introducing new concepts with a story. Stories allow younger children to grasp complicated concepts such as the sometimes intimidating and ambiguous creative process. Stories are followed by an art project that connects to the content learned.

The books you donate will expose students to a variety of historical and contemporary artists while observing a wide range of different creative processes. On my wish list, I have stories that address a diverse representation of artists. The wish list includes fun children's books that will challenge students to think independently and creatively, like a true artist!
