Highland Track and Field

Congratulations to Highland Rams boys and girls relay teams and Griffin Backman for winning state championships last weekend. Girls team won the 4 X 800 meter relay and the boys team won the 4 X 400 meter relay. Griffin Backman was also the state 4A champion in the 400 meters. Girls team included Kaja Wilcox, Ellie Davis, Marian Wrathall and Kadence Gholson. Boys team consisted of Backman, Peter Huntsman, Max Pohman and Jackson Folau.

Congratulations to freshman Griffin Backman for his 6th place finish in the 400 meters at the State track meet. He also anchored the 4 X 400 Meter relay team to a 5th place finish and a school record. Other members of the relay team were Peter Huntsman, Alexander Mitchell and Max Pohman.

Congratulations to the Highland Girls Track and Field Team for repeating as Region 6 Champs! Individuals who placed in their events and helped secure the team victory were seniors Meg Murdock, Sydney Backman, Cambelle Jones, and Kennedy Gurgel; juniors Kadence Gholson, Kaja Wilcox, Elba Costa, Alicia Sherod, Laila Close, and Meredith Lewis; sophomore Maddie Reeder ; and freshmen Ellie Davis and Lena Buccambuso. Additional relay team members on state-qualifying teams included Bostyn Beal, Marian Wrathall, Kate Gottfredson, Sophie Ray, and Anna Moreno.

Maddie Reeder, Meg Murdock and Cambelle Jones led the team to a 5th place finish at state. Reeder placed in the 1600 and 3200, Murdock in the 200 and 400, and Jones in the long jump. The 4 X 400 M relay team of Murdock, Gholson, Wilcox and Moreno were also state medalists with their 3rd place finish.

Congratulations to Meg Murdock who signed to compete in track and field at Idaho State University. Meg made the state finals in the 400 meters every year she competed, medaling her sophomore and junior years. In addition to her individual events, she was a key member of the 4 X 200, 4 X 400 and 4 X 800 meter relay teams that all placed at state, setting new school records in all events.

Congratualtions to Highland Girls Track team for their 2nd Place finish at the State Track Meet led by senior Sabrina Wright's individual championship in the 400 meters.

Congratulations to Sabrina Wright for signing with SUU on a D1 scholarship for track and field. As one of the top 400 meter runners in 5A, she was a state medalist in the 400, 4 X 200, and 4 X 400 relays and helped both teams set school records, as well as achieving All-State recognition in the 4 X 400 meter relay.

DROVE PAST R-F&P … on my way to work today and from the highway could see people working on the little league fields and it brought back fond memories. If your child has a game this weekend, commit this sign to memory, everyone will appreciate it.

This week I said goodbye to two of the most outstanding athletes I've coached in my 25 years. They were committed to training on their own during the stay-at-home order, even though their season had ended. Then, when the order was lifted, they did their workouts together, both focusing on their upcoming college careers. Good luck to Annie Murdock at the University of Utah and Nick Pembroke at Utah State. It's been my pleasure.
