Diversity in Math Club — Mental Health Workshop COMING UP!

Feeling down in the dumps? You’re not the only one. The pandemic has been a tough time for many people, on top of the regular stresses of university life.

Diversity in Math will be holding a workshop about mental health on Friday, February 11th, at 4:30PM. We’ll be talking about the causes — both personal and structural — of poor mental health, especially as it pertains to mathematics and math culture. We’ll also be discussing its effects on students like you, and evidence-based methods on how we can alleviate some of this mental burden.

We’ll be preparing materials and resources to discuss, as well as sharing our own struggles with maintaining our mental wellbeing. If you’re open to talking about your experiences as well, we would love to hear them! Things suck a little less when you’re not alone with your feelings.

FOR U0 AND U1 STUDENTS:
registration for the SciLearn Bootcamp is open and they can register here: https://www.mcgill.ca/ose/initiatives/scilearn

This 2-hour session focuses on hand-picked, neuroscience-based learning strategies that will set students up for a great winter semester at McGill.

Feedback from previous SciLearn participants: “I have a totally different idea of what the McGill community is after having taken part in this; I am U1-returning and had never felt as welcome at McGill as I did with you all” and “[One of my key takeaways from the SciLearn program is] having more awareness of the way I learn, learning new tools to study.”

McGill (Bio)Statistics Research and Career Day

Dear students,

We are pleased to announce that McGill's 5th (Bio)Statistics Research and Career Day will take place on Friday the 24th of September 2021. This year, the conference will again be held online via Zoom, due to the uncertainty regarding the Covid-19 situation.

Two well recognized researchers in statistics and biostatistics will deliver keynote speeches: Professor Alan E. Gelfand from Duke University and Professor Jennifer Hill from New York University. An exciting career panel will end the day with statistics and biostatistics graduates working in Canada and in the USA.

During this day, McGill graduate students are given a chance to present their research in the broad field of statistics. This year, we also invite undergraduate students in statistics to showcase their work in a poster competition. Conveying your research being key to the learning process, we encourage each of you to consider submitting an abstract for a talk (graduate students) or a poster (undergraduates). We believe that the undergraduate poster competition is a great opportunity to participate in an academic conference and that it will be very beneficial to them to practice their presentation skills at an early stage of their career. Please see below for information about the undergraduate poster competition. Abstract submissions will be open from August 16th, 2021 to September 8th, 2021.

To register for the event, fill in the form at https://sites.google.com/view/biostatresearchday-2021/register.

To submit an abstract for a graduate student talk or an undergraduate poster, follow this link: https://sites.google.com/view/biostatresearchday-2021/submit.

Our webpage will be updated at https://sites.google.com/view/biostatresearchday-2021/home.

Finally, feel free to send any questions or comments at [email protected].

The organizing committee.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Information about the Undergraduate Poster Competition
The registration and abstract submissions are done separately. If you plan on submitting an abstract, you do not have to complete the registration form. However, you must fill in the abstract submission form (https://sites.google.com/view/biostatresearchday-2021/submit) before Wednesday, September 8th 2021, 23:59 EDT to confirm your participation to the competition.

Once you have submitted an abstract for your poster, we will send you an email to ask you to submit your poster for the competition, by replying to the email. Therefore, please double check your email address in the abstract submission form and make sure it is correct. The deadline to submit your poster will be on Friday, September 17th 2021, 23:59 EDT, a week prior the event.

On the event day, you will give a short presentation about your poster to share your research. This presentation should not be longer than 5 minutes and should be rehearsed in order to navigate your poster smoothly over Zoom. A presentation that has reached 5 minutes will be cut.
FAQ

Q: What kind of research are you expecting me to present? I feel like my work is too naive/simple to give a talk.
A: Any research is welcome. It could be work from your summer SURA / NSERC USRA / ISM research, or it could be work from a research/project course such as MATH 396 / 410 / 470.

Q: How long should the presentation take?
A: The participants should have their posters ready such that they can present their work in no more than 5 minutes. A presentation that has reached 5 minutes will be cut.

Q: Can I ask for help in reviewing my poster / help me practice my presentation?
A: Yes, you can get any help you find necessary. However, keep in mind that your poster and presentation must be about your own research.

Q: My research project was done as a team. Could we register for the competition as a team?
A: Yes. You are allowed to register for this competition as a team. However, you must register under your teams’ leader name with “(team)” next to their name. We will email you to ask for all your team members’ names and emails. The presentation may be given by one member only or the full team. However, keep in mind that for the presentation, only 5 minutes will be allowed anyway. Rehearse accordingly.

Q: Are there any fees required to participate in this competition?
A: No, the competition is free.

We expect your poster to contain a title, your name (or the names of all members of your team) and your affiliation. We recommend that you include the following information: the objectives of your study, the methods you use, some results and a discussion of the strengths and limitations of your study. Recall a poster is a visual summary of your study: use figures and tables!

We do not have any preference for the size of your poster. However, do not forget that you will have to navigate your poster while presenting it over Zoom in your 5 minutes talk. We suggest you adjust the size of your poster accordingly! Note that you should not make slides, you must only use your poster for that presentation.

Here are some resources to help you create your poster:
- https://www.overleaf.com/gallery/tagged/poster

We hope you find this helpful!

Recall that
- The deadline to submit an abstract for your poster is on September 8th (https://sites.google.com/view/biostatresearchday-2021/submit);
- We will send you an email after you have submitted an abstract to ask for your poster. The deadline for that poster will be on September 17th.

Best,

The organizing committee:

Peiyuan Huang - Mathematics and Statistics
Victoire Michal - Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health
Tyrel Stokes - Mathematics and Statistics
Mila Sun - Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health
