Mu-yong Tao Wins Big for TKU, Taiwan and Burkina Faso

First year student of the Department of Diplomacy and International Relations, Mu-yong Tao, travelled to Rome, Italy last week to participate in Harvard University’s “World Model United Nations” competition and won the Social Innovation Challenge Division, receiving 3000 US dollars. The competition consisted of 2,500 students from over 60 different countries discussing global issues. Not only did he bring great honor and attention to Tamkang University in this contest, he shined a spotlight on Taiwan.

The event also included other Taiwanese universities:National Taiwan University, Tsing Hua University and Cheng Kung University. The competition was divided into 6 different divisions. The first three divisions required the international contestants to provide planning and schematics, answering inquiries and comments from the internet while continually making modifications. After conquering the first challenge (Mar. 14-18), the contestants then flew to Rome, Italy for the last three parts of the competition.

Mu-yong Tao selected sustained energy development and reusable resources for his project. He mentioned that while studying in Taiwan, he learned a lot about reusable resources that could prove very beneficial in his country, Burkina Faso. He hopes to later be able to create a bridge between Taiwan and his country to transfer much of the needed knowledge and resources in terms of sustainable energy to improve the quality of life for his homeland. Director of the Department of Diplomacy and International Relations, Chin-mo Cheng expressed, “Mu-yong Tao is an excellent student who is always asking questions and finding innovate methods to approach issues.”As Mu-yong Tao won the competition, he was asked if he was a member of NTU. “No I’m from Tamkang University.” He said proudly.”

Tamkang World Forum for Youth Leaders takes place on Jan. 19 and 20, This year’s theme is Prospects for the World: Meeting Challenges with Vision. The forum will consist of TKU local students, international students as well as students from sister schools coming together in discussion to focus on academic issues. This year there will be a total of 20 students from sister universities including Moscow State University (Russia), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), Kyunghee University (Korea), Gadjah Mada University (India), Bangkok University (Thailand), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan) and numerous Japanese sister schools: Kyushu University, Waseda University, Kindai University, Josai University and Akita International University. The forum will be carried out in English and begins at 9am on Jan. 19 in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall. Everyone is invited to come participate.

Chinese New Year Dinner Party!!

Who Should I Vote For?

Today marks the beginning of the 2015-16 annual Student Association Election. From Oct. 13 (Tues) 11am to Oct 15 (Thurs), booths will be available to cast your vote for the student representative that most represents you. There are many candidates that stand for various issues, but students may only vote for representatives of their own department. In the future, the chosen candidates will bring forth the most needed student issues to be reviewed by university administration.

The information of each Student Association candidate can be found next to a voter booth. Candidates promise to tackle problems in areas such as student number restrictions in courses, more subsidies international exchanges, better course selection, promotion of off-campus activities, more study resources, building renovations and more. Be sure to place your vote be for the deadline. Your vote may be the one that counts.

Chat Corner is Back in Effect

Every year at Tamkang University the 10th floor of the Ching-sheng Building is bustling with international students for reasons of internships, visa issues and scholarship documentation. Yet the area is most frequented by international and Taiwanese students seeking to improve their language skills at Chat Corner, an activity designed to help create a bridge between local and overseas students. It runs from 12:10pm to 4pm from Mon. to Fri.; all students are encouraged to come.

Upon first sight, the room appears to be filled with old friends from various countries, laughing and studying together. You’d never guess that many of them had only met moments ago. Mago, a student from Japan, sat quietly reading English literature while she waited for a student in need of a Japanese language tutor. She stated, “Not all of the material I have to read for my classes is very interesting.” She said while pointing to a book titled, Beowulf. “But, language is much easier to learn and remember when I meet interesting people and talk about fun stuff. I come here to both teach and learn.”

“Students can come here to learn any language they want.” said, Zi Heng, a Malaysian student from the Department of Industrial Economics. Zi Heng volunteers at the front desk along with Huang Tong, a student of the Department of Mass Communication. Huang Tong smiled as she added, “Many of the international students have scholarship programs that require them to do tutoring in their home language. After registering at the front desk, students can come here and learn Japanese, English, Korean, French and more.”

Chat Corner has proven to be such an effective language resource that even TKU alumni of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Benny and W***y, have returned to sharpen their English skills. “I come here to make friends with people of different cultures. It’s like I can see the whole world through the people here.” said W***y while engaging in an enthusiastic conversation with a student from Vietnam. The students continually discussed issues of all kinds including school, Tamsui, sports, movies etc. Morgen from France is currently studying International Affairs and Strategic Studies. She stated, “Chat Corner is a good idea because it lets us learn language and share differences.”

An International View of the First Week at TKU

The first week of school is always a special period time - a blend of anxiety, excitement and joy - balanced by the necessary and often times tedious paperwork. The paperwork for international students can be even more daunting, but the joy of beginning life overseas, far outweighs the inconveniences - at least that’s the case with Tamkang University’s most recent international students. On Sept. 17 the Ching-sheng building was filled with students from overseas (waiting in line), taking care of crucial student visa paperwork. On this day, the array of student facial expressions were as diverse as their cultural backgrounds.

Students did their best to pass the time by greeting and talking with new friends as they waded through the application process. “I really love everything that I’ve eaten here.” Said Jun, a student studying Chinese language from Seoul, Korea. “I decided to come to Taiwan for study because my high school in Korea has a special program with TKU.” he clarified. He added that learning to write Chinese was quite challenging, but he enjoys a good challenge. Of course students of different origins are all faced with unique challenges when it comes to adjusting to their new life.

Uyanga, a student of Financial Management from Mongolia, expressed, “The city I’m from is the coldest capital city in the world. It’s really difficult for me to adapt to the hot weather here. I have to wear sunglasses and a hat everywhere I go, but because people don’t often wear sunglasses here, they look at me like an alien creature.” she laughed. “The traffic here is really different. Lots of hills and scooters running in all directions. It’s kind of scary but also kind of fun.” Uyanga added while finishing her paperwork.

“I wanted to come here to study because it feels like a blend of both the Eastern and Western world.” Said Alice, a student of Global Commerce from Vietnam. “I love traveling and the people here are very kind so it feels super safe. I really like the culture in Taiwan.” she finished. When asked how she felt about TKU she replied, “I think TKU is a very international university and all of the teachers speak English well. They’ve been so helpful for my adjustment.”

A table of 4 girls continued to giggle as they spoke Spanish to each other. Surprisingly, they were not from Spanish speaking countries, but students of Spanish language from Macao and Malaysia. “I really like the night clubs here.” Said Ringbow Ng from Macao. “Yeah she goes to the club every night.” Her classmate Kayio joked. When asked why she came to Taiwan, Kayio responded, “I wanted to be able to travel and study at the same time. I’ve been to Penghu and I really enjoy the food and the beautiful scenery.”

Luke Robert Marks is a student of English language from California. His reasons for coming to Taiwan differ from others. “I wanted to get a better understanding of how the world works. He explained. “I did some research on the history of Taiwan and I’m really in agreement with their values. Everything here excites me just like I’m a kid again. I love that the trash trucks play music, I enjoy the international dorm that I stay in and It’s easy to make new friends. Also the architecture here is just amazing.” Luke is also a blogger that keeps a record of his travels in Taiwan (taiwander.org). Last year there were 1,803 overseas’ students from 68 countries and this year promises to have much more. We at TKU welcome you to a new life and blessed school year.
