WHY DIDN'T SAMURAI ENGAGE IN PROLONGED GROUND FIGHTING ON THE BATTLEFIELD? 🥋⚔️

In classical Japanese martial arts (koryū jūjutsu), ground techniques focused solely on immediate pins and quick finishes.

Rolling around on the dirt during a chaotic battle was considered a fatal mistake. Here is why:

👥 MULTIPLE OPPONENTS
Being stuck on the ground left a warrior completely exposed to secondary attackers. While focused on one enemy, you were an easy target for nearby soldiers with spears (yari) or swords.

🛡️ HEAVY ARMOR
Trapped beneath 20–30 kg of metal and leather, a grounded combatant was virtually helpless. An opponent could easily drive an armor-piercing dagger (yoroidōshi) directly into exposed joint gaps at the throat, armpits, or groin.
Rather than extended sport grappling, classical martial systems like Takenouchi-ryū emphasized immediate control: pin the enemy, disable them, and return to your feet as fast as humanly possible. 🏃💨

Within the chronicles of Japanese martial history, a profound schism exists between the art of survival and the art of living. For centuries, martial tradition was dictated by cold battlefield utility; today, we explore how that strategic application of violence was distilled into a disciplined philosophy of being.
