First, for the famous couture houses in Paris, we will visit the vibrant city of Milan where we will have a look at the amazing Italian fabric stores and visit a haute couture exhibition, the rest of the week you will work on your Chanel inspired jacket and you can also join several workshops to dive even deeper in all the amazing techniques this iconic jacket has to offer.

In 2023, I traveled through Japan for 5 weeks and was struck by the incredible high level of artisanal craft in every detail of society. I visited Kobe’s fashion museum and spent a whole day in their amazing fashion library!.There, I found some books on the art of hand sewing kimono’s, a craft going back thousands of years. I was intrigued by the way no fabric is wasted, seams folded in an origami like way and hand stitches not known outside of Japan. Once at home, I decided to study and learn these techniques myself, which took me a whole year. I crafted a course about handsewing the Yukata, a summer variant of the kimono. And now you have the chance to join me in October in Tokyo where I will teach you to handsew your own kimono. But that’s not all: we will have fun with a morning workshop in a indigo dye factory, where you will learn everything about the famous Japanese dark blue indigo dyeing process, we will spend a day at the famous fabric district in Tokyo to buy our kimono fabric, we will visit the national museum in Tokyo and we will have a lesson in the beautiful traditional tea ceremony!

Finally, after many requests, I have set new dates for spring/summer 2025! Join me on a week full of sewing inspiration and go home with your own handmade beautiful Chanel inspired jacket! On day 1 I will help you with a perfect fit for your body. Next, we go to Amsterdam to find the most beautiful fabric and trim. Day 2-7 you will sew your jacket according to the techniques Madame Chanel invented herself. Lunches, drinks and snacks are all included, my studio is situated in a beautiful ancient 14th century bell tower in the gorgeous small city of historic Edam. We are looking for one or more trainees for our atelier in Edam, the Netherlands. Are you an enthusiastic seamstress and would you like to learn the skills of haute couture sewing? Projects you might work on are: Ballet costumes, theatre costumes, French couture jackets, traditional Japanese kimono, silk high end kaftans, bridalwear and more! Are chanel jackets originally quilted by hand or machine?

Chanel jackets are renowned for their craftsmanship, which includes elements that are both hand-done and machine-done. The quilting on Chanel jackets is traditionally done by machine, especially for attaching the fabric to the lining. This process helps to give the jackets their structured yet soft shape. However, other aspects of Chanel jackets, like the finishing touches and some of the sewing details, are often completed by hand, reflecting the brand’s commitment to high-quality and artisanal craftsmanship. This beautiful French Jacket was made by one of my students during one of the French Jacket Sewing Retreats in Edam, the Netherlands.
