Consciousness may be a kind of hologram.
A controversial idea in physics suggests that our conscious experience may emerge from a hidden layer of reality, much like a three-dimensional hologram emerges from information encoded on a two-dimensional surface.
The concept is inspired by one of the strangest ideas in modern physics: the holographic principle.
Originally developed to help explain black holes, the holographic principle suggests that all the information contained within a three-dimensional region of space could actually be encoded on a lower-dimensional boundary. In a sense, reality as we experience it may be a projection of deeper underlying information.
Now some researchers are asking whether consciousness might work in a similar way.
Physicist Uziel Awret argues that consciousness may involve what physicists call a "duality" — two seemingly different descriptions of the same phenomenon.
One description is familiar: neurons firing, electrical signals moving through the brain, and chemical messages passing between cells.
The other may exist at the quantum level, where particles can become entangled and behave in ways that seem impossible according to everyday intuition.
Quantum entanglement occurs when particles become linked so that measuring one instantly determines properties of the other, even when separated by large distances. Einstein famously called it "spooky action at a distance."
Awret's proposal suggests that conscious experience and physical brain activity could be two sides of the same underlying process.
The idea attempts to address one of the deepest mysteries in science: the "hard problem" of consciousness.
Neuroscience can increasingly explain how the brain processes information, recognizes faces, stores memories, and controls behavior.
But it still struggles to explain why any of that activity feels like something from the inside.
Why does a particular pattern of neural activity produce the redness of red?
Why does pain hurt?
Why does the smell of coffee feel different from the sound of music?
Scientists call these subjective experiences "qualia," and no widely accepted theory currently explains how they emerge from matter.
The holographic approach suggests that consciousness may arise when information in the brain becomes organized in ways that cannot be fully described by classical physics alone.
Importantly, this remains highly speculative.
There is currently no direct evidence that quantum entanglement generates consciousness, nor that the brain operates as a holographic system. Many neuroscientists believe consciousness can ultimately be explained through conventional brain processes without invoking new physics.
Still, the theory highlights just how little we understand about the most familiar thing in existence: our own awareness.
Every thought, memory, emotion, and sensation emerges from processes occurring inside the three pounds (1.4 kilograms) of tissue between our ears.
Yet scientists still cannot fully explain why those processes produce a conscious experience at all.
