14 Days of Tribute — Day 14 of 14

A friend posed an interesting question one day. “If there is no time in eternity do those who go before us realize the time we’ve been apart?” Time is earthy. Time is a mankind thing. Pastor Max, dad, said several times how much he missed mom. Seemed like the closer it came for his promotion, the more he longed to be reunited with her. “I have thought of it many times since my wife went home to glory as well.”

My parents were far from perfect but they gave us the best gift one could receive, Jesus.

What a Mess!!
Psalms 100:4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

I only saw my Dad cry once. It was after my Mother had gone home to glory. He was living alone. I walked into his home one evening and found him crying. He said,” I’ve never been so lonesome in all my life.” I have thought of it many times since my wife went home to glory as well.

We are living in a very lonesome, messed up world. The Lord’s plan was that we walk in fellowship with him. Satan messed up so many things in the garden of Eden. He got Adam and Eve to think they would find satisfaction and fellowship apart from walking with each other and with their Lord.

The closer we get to the Lord, coupled with fellowship with godly people, the greater life will be both here and in eternity. No other plan will bring greater peace and satisfaction.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 13 of 14

It’s amazing how many things have changed since Pastor Max penned theses words just over a decade ago. So much has changed globally, economically, politically and spiritually. We are ten years closer to his return. Are we ready? Are you ready? Have you done your best to prepare your loved ones?

As dad says, “We are in "The valley of decision" Think about it, let's do something about it!”

NOW? Yes NOW? ME? YES YOU!

Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

Many years ago I heard a saying that went something like this. “For want of a spike, a rail was gone; for want of a rail, a track was gone; for want of a track, a train was delayed; for want of a train, a battle was lost; for want of a victory, a nation was lost"

When I was a teenager almost every evangelical church believed and taught that the coming of the Lord was very near. The nation of Israel had not yet been reborn, television was not yet available, I could list a number of things which to Bible says would happen before the second coming.

Today the things the Lord spoke of to his disciples are happening and yes, they are coming like labor pains as Jesus said they would. I have read in Christian publications that about 70% of Bible Believing pastors will not preach on prophetic subjects. Many of them simply do not believe in the rapture of the church.

The Bible hasn't changed. Many of the things once believed to be sinful are now part of the every day lives of "spiritual" believers. We are advised to not talk about hell, judgment, or sin. Some churches forbid their pastors to speak of these things.

Many people speak of the ‘good old days’. Days when they were not so busy and had time for such things as Sunday evening services, special meetings, and prayer meetings. People long for testimony services when people share what the Lord has done for them and is doing for them.

I believe that the one who has not changed is the Lord Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today and forever! Can we actually get back to the book? Is it possible to pray down the power of the Lord in this day? We are in "The valley of decision" Think about it, let's do something about it!

14 Days of Tribute — Day 12 of 14

Discouragement seems to be a part of our existence. It co,es by way of the global situation, social issues, and the economy. I know there were several times I’d his life when he was discouraged. It’s part of life, part of ministry. Yet Pastor Max never let that keep him from serving Jesus and reaching out to others. As Dad says, “When it is time to go the good shepherd does lead his sheep. We need to wait on Him, but also be ready to follow.”

It Came to Pass!
I Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

A lifelong friend of mine who entered the ministry about the same time I did told me of an experience which he and his wife had in one of their churches. They had a problem which caused him to become discouraged. He was sitting wondering what he could or should do in the situation.

His wife brought a Bible to him in which she had underlined four words.The words were ‘IT CAME TO PASS’. She reminded him that though we do have hard times in this world, they do not stay. For us as Christians in a sin cursed world Jesus warned there would be problems. He also promised to meet the need.

We have a wonderful Lord. I have found several times that even before we ask, the Lord is at work to meet our need. A friend told me one day, that if the Lord hasn't lead you in a certain way to go, don't go. When it is time to go the good shepherd does lead his sheep. We need to wait on Him, but also be ready to follow.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 11 of 14

Today’s memory isn’t directly one of Pastor Max, but more to do with heritage. I remember vividly going to my grandparents house one morning. I was going to help grandpa with a project that day. I was about to knock on the door when I stopped. Looking through the kitchen window I saw my grandparents at the kitchen table sitting across from each other, heads bowed, hands folded, an open Bible on the table in front of grandpa. This visual is imbedded in my mind. Dad often told me of my grandparents commitment to prayer and Bible Study. Several cousins (and thier children) attribute their faith walk to Grandpa Rupert and Grandma Violet. They laid a heritage that is growing still and had a huge impact on dad’s spiritual journey. “To be spiritually strong we need to eat the right [spiritual] food, and exercise the body.”

Check your diet!

Psalms 42:1-2 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Recently it was reported on the news that only 25% of the youth in America were physically fit to join the armed forces. In schools across America children are over weight, which is one of the big reasons our youth are unfit for military service. I ask my doctor for a plan to lose weight, he smiled and said,"Eat less, exercise more!" that is it. We are living souls. The Lord created us to not only feast on food for the body but also to exercise to keep our bodies physically strong.

To be spiritually strong we need to eat the right food, and exercise the body. Why are so many Christians spiritually weak? They have not fed their souls on the bread of life which is the Word of God, nor have they exercised themselves unto godliness. This means we need to gladly obey the Word in our daily lives.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 10 of 14

Pastor Max believed in grace. Amazing, refreshing grace. Yet he also knew grace didn’t guarantee perfection. He used David as an example. David, a man after God’s own heart. Yet he was a lousy husband, a distant dad, an unfaithful friend and a sub par leader. Still David, and dad, knew his strength was in the hope of Jesus!

“God has not changed. His Word is still true. His promises are still there, and our only hope is in the mercy and grace of our Lord.”

STEADFASTNESS

I Peter 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

I wonder how David felt. He was a teenager, too young to be in Israel's army. He was sent to the battle front where he saw the soldiers hiding when Goliath the Philistine champion stood on the hillside and challenged them.

Was he the only one who believed that the Lord God was present and able to meet the need? His brothers told him to go home. King Saul was glad to give him his armor to go challenge the Philistine! The only hope was if someone dared to believe God. David believed God. He did what he could in the name, and strength of the Lord God

The only hope he had was his faith in his Lord. Friends, our nation is in great trouble, perhaps the most danger we have ever seen. Humanly speaking there is no hope. God has not changed. His Word is still true. His promises are still there, and our only hope is in the mercy and grace of our Lord. We have just celebrated Thanksgiving. Set your heart on Him. Pray and believe as never before. He is able!

14 Days of Tribute — Day 9 of 14

It’s amazing to think what those in dad’s generation saw on the global scale. WW2, the Great Depression, Vietnam, the space age, computers and cell phones just to name a few. Faith and a strong family system (although that wasn’t perfect) held this fragile world together. What lies ahead? World peace will never come until Jesus returns. And the? Finally. Peace on earth! As Pastor Max says, “Soon the Bible says Jesus will return and yes, the final outcome will be real peace, and that peace will last forever.”

Do and Done!

Hebrews 12:2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God

Dec. 7, 1940

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon. I remember I was playing in the living room of our home in St Croix Falls. I was thirteen at the time. A news bulletin came on the radio.

I remember running and telling my dad that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor (I didn't know what it was or where it was). Dad said it was just a story, but soon the entire world knew it was true.

That event cost thousands of people their lives, and before it was over, changed the world forever. In August of 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan and the war was over, however true peace never came.

What has happened to our nation? We have become rich with things, and poor with life! Jesus who loves us has been pushed aside. Many are living in a house, not a home.

In 1945 a bomb was dropped that changed the world but brought no real peace. Soon the Bible says Jesus will return and yes, the final outcome will be real peace, and that peace will last forever.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 8 of 14

I think I got to know more about my dad during those Wednesday morning breakfasts the last few years we were together than in my growing up years. Few probably realize the struggles Pastor Max went through in his ministry years. From comments I’ve heard to this day, he had a tremendous impact on people’s lives, yet he always wanted to do more, to see more lives changed, to help those struggling to find solid ground in Jesus. After mom’s passing he struggled with missing her. Mom was a rock in his life. Yet, he never lost sight of the fact that “His Spirit is able, and anxious to meet our need.”

What Do You Expect?

Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!

Israel's king David was a young man of faith and expectation. As a youth he wasn't afraid even as he faced the giant Goliath. He expected the Lord to give him victory and was not disappointed.

God called him a man after his own heart. We are all aware of the terrible events in David's life late in his life. He committed adultery then murder to cover his adultery! Nathan the prophet was sent to David to deal with his sin.

David repented, but never forgot what he had done. In his later years he wrote this Psalm. He could have given up and said God will never trust me again, but he didn't, and we should not either

His first request of this verse is simple, "Teach me to do your will.” We, in our heart, want to do his will. We know it is best in our hearts, but we also know our flesh weak.

"For you are my God." When we realize not only our need but He desires to meet our need, we are on the right track. "Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground." His Spirit is able, and anxious to meet our need. Let him.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 7 of 14

I doubt that anyone who talked to Pastor Max for any length of time didn’t know his favorite verse in the Bible. Say it with me. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans‬ ‭8:28‬ ‭NIV‬‬).

Dad lived this verse. It wasn’t a cute quote, it was a life-style. It’s not easy going through life seeing all the tragedy from personal to global levels. But it’s easier to make your way when you know it has a purpose, and the one in charge knows best and loves you passionately. Like Dad says, “I need to trust. I don’t need to understand.”

God’s Ways and Ours

Genesis 50:19-20 But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

We look at all the evil going on today. We see wicked men trying to turn our world against its creator and redeemer. Then we see things like Haiti where hundreds of thousands of people are injured and killed. What is going on?

Part of the answer is seen in the experience of Joseph. He was hated, cast into a pit, sold into slavery in Egypt and then cast into prison. In all of this "God meant it for good to save a generation alive.”

I don't pretend to know all the answers, but Isaiah 55 tells us that God's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts are not our thoughts. God is love and he is doing the right thing, I need to trust. I don't need to understand.

14 Days of Tribute — Day 6 of 14
I remember vividly sitting by dad’s bedside as his time to leave that earthly shell drew closer. He asked me what the prognosis was and I painfully shared the news with him that soon he would be leaving us. Notice, I don’t say “he was dieing”. The believer in Jesus doesn’t die. Their heart stops. Their lungs stop taking in life-giving oxygen. But they simply move from the earthly realm into the presence of Jesus. I think I saw a slight smile on dad’s face as he said, almost with relief, “Then I’m going home.” And 14 days after his 85th earthly birthday he experienced his first heavenly birthday!

One in thirty!!

Acts 1:11 "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

In November 1948 I cried. I was enrolled in Bible College and planning for the ministry. I had doubts about the Bible. I didn’t know if it was really the Word of God, I didn’t know if I could really believe it.

I knew my grandmother had said that the Jews would go back to their home land in Palestine, and after that Jesus would come again to earth to take us to Heaven. The United Nations, and the United States had just announced that the nation Israel was recognized as a nation. It was the first event I knew of which was announced in the Bible that had come to pass.

Since that day literally hundreds of Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled. This proves beyond any doubt that the Bible is true, and yes, Jesus will come to earth for his followers. One in every thirty verses in the New Testament speaks of his coming again. Are you really ready for this to happen?

14 Days of Tribute — Day 5 of 14

As I’ve mentioned before, Pastor Max was a student of prophecy. But one can not be well versed in prophecy without first being grounded in God’s Word. In later years I would travel with dad to speaking engagements. I have to admit that as he grew closer to heaven his words seemed from a human perspective to be less forceful. Yet his impact remained powerful, powered by Holy Spirit. Lesson learned: Holy Spirit power trumps personal power!

What’s Happening

Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

I heard recently that our military chaplains or regulated as to when they can use the name "Jesus" or "heavenly Father" in their public prayers. Huge earth quakes have recently occurred in India, China, and now in Haiti . Israel is facing two terrorist group to their north and east armed with the most powerful weapon systems available. Storms are sweeping through our nation in areas where they have not seen snow to any extent for years.

Many churches in America do not preach about prophecy, and have turned their backs on Israel! In the past churches have been moved to have huge meetings for prayer and fasting, today they are just shrugging there shoulders!! We know these things. Our only hope is turning to the Lord in believing prayer. God is able

14 Day Tribute — Day 4 of 14
Pastor Max worked for years for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. While his official position was in the shipping department, that was just a front for reaching out to those who were struggling. I listened to story after story of lives he touched. Now I wish I’d listened more carefully. His heart, his passion was to enocourage others to live free of their bo***ge through Jesus. When he walked through those heavenly gates 14 days after his 85th birthday I wonder how many said (and will say) thank you Pastor Max. I’m here because of your prayers.

Why the Excuses?

Hebrews 2:1-3 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,

I greatly enjoy reading books about things like prayer, revival, and powerful conversion testimonies. In the 1800’s it was not unusual for Christians to spend all night in prayer and fasting. The prayer meeting was recognized as the power center of the church. The Sunday evening service was the place where souls repented of sin and tears flowed as the Lord worked in the lives of Christians and unsaved souls who came to Christ.

We talk about those “Good Old Days.” The Church has almost totally discontinued the prayer service, and in most cases the Sunday evening service has disappeared because with all the new labor saving devices we just don’t have time to go to church twice a day!

We have new programs, but lack the old time power! Are we neglecting God’s plan? I desperately want to see the Holy Spirit work, and so do many others. Why do we talk about this and not do our part? The Lord has not changed, nor has his Spirits power.

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation?”

14 Days of Tribute.
Pastor Max experienced his final rest 14 days after his 85th birthday. Dad was a student of prophecy with the intent of encouraging us to watch the times and bring people to Jesus. This devotional, written over ten years ago struck me as being, in itself, prophetic!

BE AWARE
I Thessalonians 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

Jesus said that in the last days perilous times will come. From a bulletin which came out today [I found],
• One billion people (1 out of 7) suffered from hunger this year
• A new virus is growing in Asia which destroys antibiotics
• World banks are demanding a new world currency to replace the U S dollar
• Google is working on a implant to be inserted on all school children
• Almost half of those who profess to know the Lord have okayed gay marriages

Yes, the world is going to get worse and worse. Yes, our Lord who gave his life for us wants us to be lights in this sin darkened world until he takes us home. We all need to be reminded.
