All lectures are open to the public, begin at 7:30 pm, and are held in Devlin 101 on the main campus of Boston College. The public is invited to participate in the question and comment session following each lecture.

Please be with us next Monday, April 8, as Vincent Pollina of Tufts University returns to speak about “Dante's Bloodiest Bolgia: Iconography and Acts of Reading.” Followers of our series have long appreciated the erudition and humanity of Prof. Pollina's lectures. We will meet in Devlin 101 and begin at 7:30 pm. The event is open to all, and we hope you will join us.

Last evening Dante devotees convened to hear Sara E. Diaz explore how the construction of gender within the conjugal unit variously shapes Dante's tenzone with Forese Donati, the narrative devoted to Forese in Purgatorio 23, and Dante's encounter with Nino Visconti in Purgatorio 8. Prof. Diaz's illuminating talk elicited much thoughtful reflection which animated the conversation that followed her presentation.

On March 18 Professor Sara Diaz of Fairfield University will speak on “Violence and Vulnerability: From Dante’s Tenzone with Forese to the Commedia,” and on April 8 Professor Vincent Pollina of Tufts University will explore “Dante’s Bloodiest Bolgia: Iconography and Acts of Reading.” Watch this space for reminders!

On Monday evening, a group of Dante scholars and enthusiasts heard Todd Boli speak on the itineraries, geographical and literary, that shaped Dante's exile. Prof. Boli's talk was followed by a conversation which ranged from the Comedy's embryonic drafts to changing notions of tragedy and comedy during Dante's life.

Dear fellow Dante lovers! The 2018-19 Boston College Dante lecture series will offer three talks, one in the fall and two in the spring. Returning to our podium on Monday, November 19, will be independent scholar Todd Boli, whose talk will be called “Homeless and Uncrowned: Tracing Dante’s Exile.” On Monday, March 18, Prof. Sara Diaz of Fairfield University will be joining us for the first time with a lecture entitled “Violence and Vulnerability: From Dante’s Tenzone with Forese to the Commedia.” Another esteemed veteran of our series, Prof. Vincent Pollina of Tufts University, will return in April to speak to us on the illustrations of Inferno 28 (precise date still to be determined). The lectures are open to the public, begin at 7:30 pm, and are held in Devlin 101 on the main campus of Boston College. Yesterday evening at Boston College, Enrico Carnevali spoke on Dante’s theory of law and imperial authority. Prof. Carnevali explained how, for Dante, the ideal imperial-papal relationship was not that in which church took up sword to oppose the emperor but rather one like that in which Pope Agapetus led the emperor Justinian to Christian truth, and an inspired Justinian in turn codified the laws that served to guide humanity to peace and happiness. The talk was followed by questions, and many lively discussions continued even after proceedings were adjourned.

Last evening at Boston College, Lino Pertile discussed how the use of intelligence varies for Dante, Boccaccio, and Machiavelli according to how they see it serving different purposes, whether charitable, social, or political. Prof. Pertile's talk cited a wide range of examples and ignited an enthusiastic follow-up discussion to which many contributed.

Pescosolido Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, will present a lecture entitled “Uses and Abuses of Intelligence from Dante to Machiavelli.” Professor Pertile has shared his thoughts on a number of cantos in Dante's Comedy in the past, and we are happy to welcome him back. The lecture is open to all and will take place at 7:30 pm in 101 Devlin Hall on the campus of Boston College. We look forward to your joining us.
