Learning Bilingually

Learning Bilingually I create Spanish resources and share ideas, research, and tips to support bilingual educators, families, and our emerging bilingual children.

Welcome to Learning Bilingually! I am a passionate dual language educator of emerging bilingual children. I have taught Kindergarten Dual Language and currently teach 4th grade Dual Language. I have my Master of Arts in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. I will share resources I've created, information, research, strategies and ideas that center around our dual language bilingual programs and students.

Dual Language programs should be about more than learning two languages. They’re about creating systems where bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and equity can thrive.

These are the principles I believe every strong Dual Language program should be built on.

Not all vocabulary has to be taught from scratch‼️

Spanish-English cognates give multilingual learners an immediate bridge between the languages they already know and the one they’re learning. By explicitly teaching cognates, we help students build vocabulary, strengthen reading comprehension, and grow confidence.

That’s why I created my Mis Primeros Cognados series - to make those connections visible from the very beginning. 💙📚

We cannot continue asking multilingual learners to adapt to systems that weren’t designed with them in mind. 🤔

It’s time to shut down deficit views of multilingualism and advocate for recognizing for the incredible asset it is.

Our students deserve more than good intentions - they deserve equitable instruction, opportunities, and a recognition of all they already bring into their classrooms & schools.

One of the most persistent myths in education is that families should stop speaking their home language so their child will learn English faster.

Research tells us the opposite.

This school year, let’s make sure families hear the message they deserve: Keep speaking your home language. You’re not holding your child back - you’re giving them one of the greatest gifts for lifelong learning!

The language we use shapes the way we think about our students. 💭When we shift from deficit-based language to asset-based language, we also shift our expectations, our instruction, and the opportunities we create for multilingual learners.👏🏼

As we prepare for a new school year, let’s remember:
✨ Home languages are assets.
✨ Multilingualism is a strength.
✨ Every student’s linguistic & cultural background belongs in our classrooms.

Visible leadership is not just about being seen — it is about being present, approachable, and willing to step in where support is needed most.
This week reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful leadership happens in the cafeteria, the hallways, dismissal, the playground, and the everyday moments where teachers and students need to feel supported.
As an Intern Assistant Principal, I am learning that proactive leadership means listening closely, anticipating needs, strengthening systems, and showing up with consistency and care.
Because at the heart of leadership is the message:
I see you. I value you. I am here with you.
