This week, the team over at UQ Moreton Bay Research Station and Study Centre and the Faculty of Science Workshops team deployed a recently upgraded sensory buoy out in Moreton Bay (Quandamooka). The buoy is part of a sensory buoy network maintained by MBRS and collects important environmental data such as temperature, turbidity, and conductivity which can be used by researchers to learn more about the health of the Bay. A big thanks to Christian Forster and Tom Mason in the Workshops team for their hard work in getting the buoys set up, and to Simon Bobeldyk and Kevin Townsend for deploying the buoys.

Our colleagues over at AMSA South East Queensland are hosting their annual Science in the Pub event on Wednesday 20 November from 6-9pm at The Ship Inn in South Bank. The event is free for AMSA members! Registration is essential, please see the post below for full details.

Our station teams from Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) and UQ Moreton Bay Research Station and Study Centre (MBRS) were at last month's Australian Marine Sciences Association annual conference promoting our research station facilities to marine researchers from across Australia and New Zealand. A big thanks to HIRS Station Manager Dr Stuart Kininmonth and MBRS team member Vicki Bennion for attending and promoting our stations to to conference attendees! CMS researchers Dr Matthew Holden (UQ School of Mathematics and Physics) and Dr Elvis Okoffo (Queensland Alliance of Environmental Health Sciences) have been named as finalists in this year's Queensland Young Tall Poppy Science Awards! A huge congratulations to Dr Holden and Dr Okoffo, pictured here with the 2023 Queensland Young Tall Poppy of the Year, CMS member Associate Professor Carissa Klein.

Are you a current marine student or recent graduate and wondering what your options are for a career in the marine sciences? Along with our friends and colleagues at AMSA South East Queensland, the Centre for Marine Science will be hosting a 'Careers in Marine Science' breakfast event on Thursday 29 August from 7.30am - 9.30am. Attendees will hear from speakers in a range of marine careers, including government, NGO, consulting, and academia, and have the chance to interact with the speakers in small groups. Speakers will share insights into their career paths and provide some tips and tricks for finding the path that's right for you.
