Diego Feinmann

(IPI PAN)

will deliver a talk:

Reassessing the Link between Relevance and Informativeness

Abstract:

The dominant view in cognitive science and formal pragmatics is that relevance is a matter of informativeness: a sentence is relevant if it is informative, and irrelevant otherwise. In this talk, I consider both non-probabilistic and probabilistic approaches to relevance, and conclude that, insofar as they entail that informativeness is a necessary condition for relevance, they are bound to fail: it is possible for a sentence to be uninformative and yet be perceived as a relevant contribution. Time permitting, I will also discuss some experimental work on this topic (forthcoming, with Sonia Ramotowska).

About the speaker:

Diego Feinmann is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where his research focuses on the formal semantics and pragmatics of natural language. His publication record includes work in leading venues such as Journal of Semantics, Linguistics and Philosophy, Snippets, Journal of Logic, Language and Information, and Journal of Psycholinguistic Research. Across papers on homogeneity and vagueness, domain restriction, relevance, and non-maximality, his work combines technical precision with a strong feel for foundational questions at the semantics–pragmatics interface.

The happening “Life Goes On” brought together students and alumni of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Warsaw, and the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

Held on April 22, 2026, on Earth Day and Water Day, as part of the “Bioethical Arboretum” symposium, the work unfolded simultaneously at the botanical gardens of the University of Warsaw and the University of Zagreb, bringing together performance and sculpture in public space in a shared, though distant, experience. In both gardens, the movement was structured as a passage through corresponding locations – the fountain, greenhouse, flower garden, alpinarium, arboretum, and systematic field – with the direction reversed between the two cities.
In Zagreb, the procession symbolically unfolded from life toward death, and in Warsaw from death toward life. In Warsaw, performers first disassembled the spatial installation – an arrangement of sculptural “wild arrows” (willow rods, latex, photoluminescent pigments) – and then proceeded in a procession, gradually stepping out to occupy designated locations. In Zagreb, the procession began without performers, incorporating them one by one along the path to ultimately complete the installation.
At moments throughout the performance, performers introduced playful interventions that shifted the direction and dynamics of movement, opening space for shared experience and reflection on the relation between body and space.

Zagreb performers: Buga Kranželić, Jurica Pakračić, Iva Huette, Leona Gubijan, Sven Kezele

Warsaw performers: Justyna Sałacińska, Helena Krawiec, Ilina Kaczorowska, Irena Moszyńska, Nicole Pawlukiewicz
Photography: Antoni Jeśmanowicz (Warsaw), Zvonimir Ferina (Zagreb)

“Life Goes On” was co-created by Croatian sculptor Manuela Pauk and Matija Vigato (University of Zagreb), currently on a short-term CEEPUS mobility in Warsaw under the supervision of Tadeusz Ciecierski.

TSA Colloquium April 30 - Thought Sharing in Action: A Naturalistic Approach - UPF This talk begins with two familiar cases. In one, we walk through a museum together, pause in front of a painting, and move on. Hours later, I remark, “That figure in the corner was unsettling,” and you immediately understand what I mean, even though neither of us is now looking at the painting....
