Miami administrators faced a gauntlet of faculty and librarians wearing FAM red and asking pointed questions at yesterday's Faculty Assembly. One member asked why there was such a disconnect between Miami leadership and the audience of faculty and librarians in the room, requesting an honest answer that was not received.

“The idea that faculty aren’t permitted to teach outside or indeed teach out at any place other than their classroom is just so preposterous on its face. I’m not sure what the university thought it was going to accomplish, except to continue to make itself look silly,” [History professor Steve] Conn said. “As I explained in my note to the provost, I’ve taught outside when the air-conditioning has failed in my classroom—did I violate a university policy? It reveals an office of academic affairs which is either simply disconnected from the faculty, or has been so co-opted by the Board of Trustees as to have been essentially neutered.”

University officials say the planned event violates the collective bargaining agreement, as well as Ohio law. Faculty say this is “untrue and a gross mischaracterization” of the teach-out, which was intended to be celebratory.

Oxford, OH — Late in the day on August 31, two days before a planned Labor Day Teach-OUT on September 2, Miami University’s Office of the Provost sent an email communication forbidding faculty from participating.

The University has never demanded department-chair approval before a professor moved their class outside, and this email communication seems to cover only September 2, leading faculty to wonder if the University’s response is targeting protected Union activity specifically.

Miami University has forbidden faculty from participating in FAM's planned Labor Day event tomorrow by handing down a new edict that we are not allowed to teach outside. Really? That's news to both faculty and students, who have been teaching and learning outside in a hands-on way for decades. If this concerns you, come to Faculty Assembly TOMORROW, September 2 at 4:00pm outside of Shriver 104 and wear FAM red.
