He was one of the most brilliant writers in the world. A true agrarian heart with wisdom that surpasses so much of this current generation. I recommend every book he has written, especially The Unsettling of America.

We used his “Peace of Wild Things” poem on one of our Homesteaders of America tshirts one year. It feels appropriate to share it again now.

“When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

You don’t need hundreds of acres to make a difference.

The homesteading community has something that others don’t have—hope. You could say that homesteading is fear based, but that doesn’t make sense. You could compare it to “doom and gloom” but that wouldn’t apply either. We have conviction that many don’t understand. Our lives literally revolve around hope. When we plant a seed in the soil, we hope it will grow. When the seed grows, we hope it will be fruitful and multiply.

When our livestock are bred, we hope they will carry full term and birth a healthy baby. When the drought comes, we hope for rain. When we prep and store away food, it’s because we hope we’ll never have to use it, and we hope there will come a time where if we do have to use it, it won’t be for long.

Faith is the substance, the evidence, of things HOPED for. But faith without works is dead.

This homesteading movement is not just about taking back your food and health system. It’s about bringing it all back home to micro-level economy, community, education, and faith. It’s about bringing it all back to where it was always supposed to be—the home. The farm. The soil. The leadership. The elders.

It is easier to grow in this place—food, health, children, and hope. Your community becomes interwoven so tightly that all of the three cord strands are not easily broken. There is substance—not surface level save face.

Homesteading is more—so much more. And one day we will see just how Divinely inspired this movement is, and was. As our forefathers said, it is only by Providence that we are here. That we remain. That we are healed. That we heal others. And that we have liberty.

May we never forget this, or take it for granted.

Amen.
