Island Ecology 2025 has made a commendable start, leveraging the knowledge of science experts: Ranger Anderson (CBSP), Dr. Taggart, Andy Fairbanks & Hope Grubbs (Halyburton), and Tanner Nance (Airlie Gardens). It is especially gratifying to work with Tanner and Hope, who are notable alumni of our island ecology program.

Our fourth week of island ecology was incredibly informative. Thank you, Jessica and Dru from Soil and Water, for enlightening us on coastal geology and soils. We concluded our final hike with the Basin Trail at Fort Fisher, where we finally spotted a painted bunting!

Our summer 2024 island ecology class is flying by! The sessions seem to be getting shorter. We've had great hikes, guest speakers, and identification activities so far.

That’s a wrap on IEE 2023! We had a solid core of curious students this summer session. Our last hike to the Fort Fisher basin trail did NOT disappoint! Painted buntings were chatty and we also heard clapper rails and willets.
