Last month, the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to a close—and UMass Boston alumna Johana Arias '14 was part of the team working behind the scenes to help bring one of the world’s largest sporting events to life. ⚽🌎

In her role as executive assistant, Johana supported senior executives across multiple functions, helping manage priorities, meetings, travel, and coordination across teams. That vantage point gave her a firsthand look at the scale, complexity, and collaboration required to keep an event like the World Cup moving.

“No two days are the same,” she said. “There are always moving pieces, unexpected challenges, and shifting priorities. My role is to stay ahead of those changes, solve problems as they come up, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.”

After months of working toward the tournament’s biggest moments, one of Johana’s most memorable experiences came at the Final, when she finally had the chance to step back and take it all in.

“Knowing that I had played a small part in bringing such a historic event to life made it a moment I’ll never forget.”

In 1969, while astronauts were landing on the moon and Jimi Hendrix was performing at Woodstock, alumnus Tim Crowe ’70 was spending his junior year at the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station studying the behavior of helmeted guineafowl, a large, speckled bird native to Africa.

That experience helped launch a lifelong career in behavior, evolutionary biology, and ecology. Tim went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of Chicago and his PhD from the University of Cape Town, where he later served as a professor until his retirement in 2013.

Thank you to Tim for sharing this incredible glimpse into his time at UMass Boston—and where it led him! 🐦🌿

UMass Boston students recently visited New England Biolabs in Ipswich, MA, for a behind-the-scenes look at the campus and a career panel featuring UMass Boston alumnus Mike Benway '86, '06, senior field application scientist at NEB; former UMass Boston mentors; and graduates of Massachusetts public universities.

The visit gave students a closer look at careers in biotechnology, opportunities to connect with industry professionals, and a better understanding of the opportunities available to them after graduation.

We would like to extend a special thanks to both UMass Boston alumnus Mike Benway and research scientist Rebekah Silva, who helped organize the visit and welcome students to campus.

Earlier today, students participating in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Integrative & Evolutionary Biology shared their summer research during a poster presentation in UMass Boston’s Integrated Sciences Complex! 🔬🌱🧬

Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the REU program gives undergraduate researchers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work alongside faculty mentors, and explore research across integrative and evolutionary biology.

Congratulations to all of this summer’s student researchers on a fantastic showcase of their work! 👏

This , we're celebrating Katty Jimenez G’26!

Katty is the assistant director of financial aid at UMass Boston and earned her master’s degree in English this May. Along with receiving her diploma, she was also awarded the annual Ann E. Berthoff Award for the most outstanding final project in Composition Studies.

Her project, “Deconstructing Standard White American English (SWAE) Hierarchy: How Translingual Approaches to First-Year Composition Resists Linguistic Hegemony in a GenAI Era,” explored language, power, and first-year writing in the age of generative AI.

"I'm really proud to be a two-time graduate of one of the best institutions of higher education in Boston," said Katty. "UMass Boston has not just given me education, but friends, life-long love, and work experiences to set me up for success. I get to work my best as an assistant director in Financial Aid while also teaching English Composition this Fall, right back where it all started."

Congratulations, Katty! 👏
