How does human behavior shape the spread of infectious disease โ€” and how does disease reshape human behavior?

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, is delighted to host Dr. Piklu Mallick for a talk on the complex feedback loop between epidemics and society.

Date: Monday, 22 June
Time: 4:00 PM
Venue: Prof. N Kesavamurthy Seminar Room (CSE-106)

Dr. Mallick will explore both directions of the diseaseโ€“behavior feedback loop. He will discuss the "testing paradox" โ€” a counterintuitive regime where true infection prevalence falls even as reported cases rise โ€” and what it means for public health decision-making. Using COVID-19 data and Bayesian inference, he will then show how collective responses to an evolving epidemic can be quantified, including the delay and the key drivers behind population-level behavioral change.

A central theme of the talk is how physics-based tools, dynamical systems analysis, and statistical inference can together illuminate the interplay between disease dynamics and human behavior.

๐€๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ค๐ž๐ซ: Dr. Piklu Mallick is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, Gรถttingen, in the group of Prof. Dr. Viola Priesemann. He recently completed his PhD in Physics at Georg-August-Universitรคt Gรถttingen, with doctoral research on the feedback loop between human behavior and infectious disease dynamics. Combining mechanistic compartmental models with hierarchical Bayesian inference, his work spans COVID-19 dynamics, sexually transmitted infections, and network-based epidemic models, with publications in PNAS and other journals. He brings an interdisciplinary background in Physics and VLSI Design from the University of Calcutta.

Faculty members and students are warmly invited to attend.

Congratulations to Sai Keerthana Karnam, a PhD scholar at our Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, on being selected for the We are proud to see her work recognised by one of the leading research labs in the field.

Keerthana's research, carried out under the supervision of Prof. Animesh Mukherjee, looks at how people interact with conversational AI systems, and how these systems shape user behaviour, decision making, trust, and autonomy. As AI assistants become part of everyday life, understanding their real world impact on society matters more than ever.

Her work studies how people use AI, how conversations can steer users, and how personalisation and memory shape these interactions, so as to surface both the opportunities and the risks of increasingly capable AI systems. The longer goal is to build methods for auditing and evaluating deployed AI systems, and to help design AI that is transparent, trustworthy, and aligned with human values.

Please join us in congratulating Keerthana and Prof. Mukherjee on this well deserved recognition. We look forward to the impact her work will have.

Which problems can a computer truly solve efficiently โ€” and can we answer that using nothing more than addition and multiplication? These are the questions that drive ๐๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ. ๐€๐›๐ก๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ฅ ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฃ๐ž๐ž's research.

We're delighted to welcome Prof. Chatterjee to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. A theoretical computer scientist working in algebraic complexity, he designs algorithms using the elegant machinery of algebra to attack some of the deepest open problems in computation.

His work has appeared at the field's most prestigious venues, including STOC, FOCS, and the SIAM Journal on Computing, spanning problems from identity testing of algebraic formulas to the long-studied relationship between determinants and algebraic branching programs.

In his own words: "Don't put too much pressure on yourself to 'make a difference.' Instead, focus on enjoying the process of learning, thinking, and challenging yourself." And when the problems get tough, you might just find him reaching for his guitar.

Swipe through to learn what first drew him to complexity theory, the problem that excites him most right now, and the two researchers โ€” one past, one present โ€” he'd most love to work alongside.

Prof. Chatterjee is currently looking for motivated PhD students eager to explore theoretical computer science. If that sounds like you, reach out.

We are delighted to share the successful completion of our workshop on Advances in Theoretical Computer Science!

Over the course of the workshop, participants explored a diverse range of fascinating topics, including Approximation algorithms, Computational Geometry, Reliability of Statistical Samplers, Quantum Complexity and Fourier Analysis of Boolean Functions. The lectures offered valuable insights into both foundational concepts and exciting new directions in theoretical computer science.

The workshop celebrates the 65th birth year of Prof. Sudebkumar Prasant Pal, a distinguished alumnus of the Department and a pioneer whose work in Computational Geometry and Graph Theory has shaped the field and inspired generations of researchers.

A sincere thank you to all the speakers, participants, and organizers whose enthusiasm and engagement made the workshop a rewarding learning experience. We look forward to many more such opportunities to foster collaboration, curiosity, and research in this vibrant field.

Published a decade ago, this work conducted one of the first large-scale systematic studies of online hate speech, examining its targets across platforms like Twitter and Whisper. The research introduced a principled, scalable methodology to detect and categorize hate speech โ€” by race, behavior, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, gender, religion, and more โ€” yielding insights that have shaped how researchers and practitioners approach hate speech detection to this day.

A decade later, the questions this paper raised remain urgently relevant. This award is a testament to the work's lasting scientific impact and its continued relevance to online safety, content moderation, and social computing research.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mainack Mondal on this wonderful milestone. We are proud to have him as part of our department!
