"Internationalizing Christian Higher Education" Conference 2017 12/06/2017

From June 4-6, 2017, nearly 100 participants from 60 different institutions gathered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the Prince Conference Center, to learn about the theme, "Learning to Listen, Listening to Learn."

The conference opened on Sunday with a powerful plenary address by Dr. Ruth Padilla DeBorst which encouraged participants to identify the “sticks in their ears” that impede them from truly listening across social, ethnic and cultural barriers. The group gathered for dinner and then ended the evening with a meaningful Pentecost worship services, led by the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship (CICW).

Monday's schedule opened with morning worship by the CICW. Next, the first plenary panel, the IDEA Fund, spoke on interfaith action and collaboration. In the afternoon, participants broke into various sessions to learn from one another on a variety of topics relevant to the theme. Next, they were able to explore local organizations and offices related to academia and community listening during the afternoon learning excursion tours.

During dinner, IAPCHE honored Dr. Harry Fernhout for his servant leadership the past two years. Sid Rooy, John Vander Stelt, and Danie Strauss, participants at IAPCHE's first founding conferences in 1975 and 1978 were also honored. The evening concluded with the second plenary panel on how to listen and learn from one another despite deep divisions. This panel included Ron Kraybill, Skot Welch, and Claudia Beversluis.

On the final day, Tuesday, participants worshiped together once again led by the CICW. The final plenary speaker, Dr. Faith Ngunjiri, blessed participants with her talk on listening and learning in order to lead from intersections of identities and roles. The day continued with more breakout sessions, and finally, participants gathered for the closing. Dr. Harry Fernhout first thanked the many sponsors and participants; he gave the floor to Dr. Shirley Roels, IAPCHE's upcoming Executive Director. She gave a moving speech about the importance of engagement of the members of IAPCHE's network. The group sang a parting song together, and the conference concluded.
