I wanted to share my story about how Garmin Descent saved my life, husband's life and all of the crew and passengers on our boat.

This story dates back to last year in July. While vacationing in the Philippines on a small island called Malapascua with friends for diving and shenanigans, we set off for an very unforgettable day. It was early in the morning on a beautiful day with rainbows over the islands when we boarded a vessel headed for a remote island called Captaincillo. This boat ride was intended to take 2-3 hours. As we trekked along in the far distance we could see a storm wall it was still quite far out and no cause for concern as of yet. In a short while it was becoming evident that it may be time to reconsider and turn back. The rain came upon us quickly .The captain, slowed the engines with the intention of going back the way we came but it was too late. As the captain quieted the engine seemingly from nowhere a huge wind grabbed the boat catching the deck covering like a sail and with in seconds capsized this very large boat. As the boat keeled everyone scramble those who could jump did, some remain trapped in the hull and others were literally thrown into the sea. One of those people was my husband. When he was thrown in it was enough force and depth to activate the dive mode on his Garmin Descent. After freeing himself from under the outriggers moments later he surfaced triggering the Garmin to mark his GPS location which happened for all dives. After freeing everyone and counting all those present, we began our self rescue efforts in hopes to be saved. After multiple dives in to the sunken portion of the hull we were able to recover a few phones in dry bags and call for help. However, we had been drifting then for nearly an hour with no radio or beacon. When calling for a rescue team my husband Colin was able to give the GPS location of the crash site due to the GPS pin from the dive and give the current location which is a standard function of our Descents. The shop was then able to track our drift in order to direct the search efforts where we would be. After three and a half hours a drift search team arrived and were easily able to locate us. Without our Garmins and guidance this may have been a story we didn't live to tell.
