My name is Louis Venters, and I am a professor of history and African & African American Studies at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, and a practicing public historian. The main focus of my scholarship is situating the Baha'i Faith in the history of the United States, especially in South Carolina. My first book, No Jim Crow Church: The Origins of South Carolina's Baha'i Community (Univers
ity Press of Florida, 2015), is a full scholarly treatment of the early development of an in*******al Baha'i community in Jim Crow South Carolina. My second book, A History of the Baha'i Faith in South Carolina (History Press, 2019), is a short, copiously illustrated overview that brings the story up to the early 21st century. This page has been an invaluable tool, raising public awareness of the important South Carolina Baha'i story and allowing me to crowdsource some aspects of the research and keep folks up to date. Now I'm putting it to use for a number of related projects: a full-length sequel to No Jim Crow Church covering the period from the mid-1960s to the end of the 20th century; a study and appreciation of the life and times of Muhiyidin Moye, the late young SC Baha'i and civil rights activist; and an edited collection of the writings of Louis G. Gregory, the SC native who was one of the "founding parents" of the American Baha'i community. To help preserve and protect the priceless heritage of the Baha'is of South Carolina, please use this page to share your photographs, memorabilia, and stories.
