And at the end of the programme they graduate. But during the course of the journey, we (both students and faculty) are sadly missing the wood for the trees. Between the packed sessions, submissions and surprise quizzes, we felt that there hasn't been much interaction between students and faculty. Students can benefit from the extensive expertise of the faculty and faculty can benefit from the experience of the students.Thus Gurukul was formed to bridge the chasm between students and faculty.

Dear Students,
I've been asked to give you a parting message as you leave for the real world.

I've always shared a more informal relationship with you than average so I'll cut short the usual jazz about "make the Institute proud, uplift the nation" etc etc (though I am sure you'll do that too !).

You are about to enter the "adult" world - pressures and responsibilities will rise, life will sometimes be tense and often unfair.

Most significantly, you will be strongly pressured to conform to a cookie-cutter "corporate image".

My heartfelt message to you is: Don't succumb to that pressure, don't lose your individual spark.

To use a personal example - lets face it, the role of "IIM Professor" carries a highly stuffy image.
Something like the "definition of a machine" prof from 3 Idiots.

Finding myself in that role, I have tried my best to show that one can do a good job as a prof (I hope !) and still be a fun person. Not from any self-important desire to "set a shining example", but simply because that's the way I wanted to be.

Sometimes that sort of thing comes with a cost, but IMO, its worth it.
(You may, of course, disagree - that's part of being individual !)

So there you are.
In the words of Austin Powers: Don't lose your Mojo !
All too easy to lose and very difficult to get back.

And if you ever need a friendly word or a shoulder, I'm here.

Dear Gurukul:

Let me snd you somethinmg I received frm a very good friend a few months ago. on good relationships. If you are happy in life right now, itâ€™s not because everything about your life is necessarily going right, but because a relationship that really matters to you the most is going great. If you are unhappy in life right now, itâ€™s not because everything about your life is going wrong, but because a relationship that really matters to you the most is not going right.

Relationships are like seeds. They have to be nurtured and developed. Expectations are like weeds. They grow on their own accord. When enough investment goes into building a relationship, the expectations in that relationship can be managed. When a relationship is left un-nurtured, then the expectations in that relationship shake the very roots of the relationship. Our problem is growing expectations in stagnant relationships.

Let us use the metaphor of a savings bank account. Deposits build the reserves in an account from which we can withdraw - but we can withdraw only to the extent we have built the reserves. Similarly, withdrawals in a relationship are possible only to the extent we have made deposits in that relationship.

In a relationship where there is substantial emotional reserve, mistakes will be tolerated and forgiven, the meaning will be understood even when communication is inadequate, and your intentions will be appreciated even if you fall a little short in your actions. In all, the relationship will be good because you are considered good. And you are considered good because of the deposits you have made to build the emotional reserves in that relationship.

Make your love visible by being expressive and demonstrative. Seek to give, but also be graceful in receiving. Receiving is one way of showing your respect for the giver, and it is a huge deposit. Building great relationships is an art; so get artistic. Mythology shows that even the Gods had problems with relationships. Here is an opportunity to be one upon God.

Let us build good relationship and be happy and happier in years to come.

Dear students:

As you trade the safe and secure campus life for a competitive and uncertain professional life, I want to share with you some thoughts culled from my own adventure (I graduated from IIMC in 1990) that you may find useful in your own journey:

1. Never forget the basics - work hard, work smart and enjoy the ride.
2. Believe in yourself; there will be too many people around you who will not think highly of you...at least you should not be one among them.
3. Be curious of things and of people around you.
4. Know and appreciate the difference between 'important' and 'urgent' when you prioritize. To be productive over the longer term, you need to drop several urgent demands on your time for the more important things that you are seeking.
5. Take risks. Accept challenges. Since most of us don't know where we want to end, at least make the journey interesting.
6. Know your strengths and weaknesses (in a honest way); without that you will be running hard to stay in the same place. Ideally you should seek jobs/work where spending 80% of your energy/focus makes you a star; pushing yourself a little bit will make you a superstar.
7. Be open to new ideas and new ways to do things; it is okay to admit that you don't know something and try to learn rather than pretend knowing it and being embarrassed later.
8. You will all face ethical challenges sometime in your professional and personal life. For those of you whose values are not strong enough to deal with these challenges, here is a simple suggestion:
Close your eyes and think for a second how your close family/friends (people you care about) will react when they find out. If you can live with their reaction, go ahead; else stop and change course.

Good luck and may you bring your alma mater pride and fame.
