Mizuhara Kuro Yoshinari, a member of this school and feudal lord of Mizuhara Castle (Genkyu era 1204), received the teachings of Iai Nuki (quick sword drawing) at Mount Kurama (Kyoto) directly from Minamoto no Yosh*tsune, one of the most famous Bushi in all of Japan.
In the Dojo of Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu (1824–1909), master of O sensei Takamatsu, there was an inscription that read: "the secret of Shinden Fudo Ryu is the Principle of Nature (Shizen)":
"Seek peace in your heart. Pain and sadness are part of Nature. Seek the Fudoshin spirit."
Towards the end of the Edo period (1855), Toda sensei served as chief fencing instructor (IAI & KEN JUTSU) at the national military academy (Kobusho) established by the Tokugawa government.
The specialties of Shinden Fudo Ryu were: Jutai Jutsu, Dakentai Jutsu, Iai Nuki (quick sword drawing), and Ken Jutsu (swordsmanship).
It is said that this school may have been the origin for the subsequent development of Japanese Iai.Connections have been established between the sword techniques of the Hoki Ryu school and Shinden Fudo Ryu.
Hoki Ryu is one of the ancient schools whose principles have been incorporated into the current SEITEI IAI Katas of the ZNIR (Zen Nippon Iaido Renmei), such as: Kesa Giri, Morote Tsuki, Soete Tsuki, or Shiho Giri.
The traditional sword of Shinden Fudo Ryu (Odachi / Nodachi) was longer than a standard Katana, and it was used to cut through the opponent's armor or helmet.
