UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom (U.K.) is a union of four lands.England,Scotland and Wales take up the island of Great Britain while the provine of Nothern Ireland consists of six counties in Ireland. The U.K. also has close economic and political links with self governing territories such as the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea,and the Channel Islands, off the coast of northwest France.
The U.K is an industrial nation with a large population for its size. However, outside its crowded towns and cities there is dramatic and beautiful countryside, including the heather- covered glens of Scotland, the deep valleys and mountains of Wales, and the rolling, grassy fields of England, and Nothern Ireland.A mild and wet climate makes much of the land green and fertile.

The sea has played an important role in the history of this nation.During 1700s and 1800s, the British Navy was the most powerful fleet in the world.British control of the seas enabled it to build a vast overseas empire and become a great trading nation.

Today , the U.K is still a major industrial power, but its political influence on world affairs has declined.

Although the U.K. is a monarchy, real political power lies with Parliament. During recent years many people in Scotland and Wales have campaingned for separate parliament. In Northern Ireland, some of the population want to be part of the Republic of Ireland. Since 1969, this caused a bitter civil conflict ,but a ceasefire in 1994 brought hopes for peace.

Zaire

On some early European maps of Africa, the center of the continent where Zaire is was left blank or marked with the words "unknown land " or "here are lions ." When European explorers eventually traveled up the Zaire (Congo) River in 1877, they found dense rain forest. Since prehistoric times, the forest has been home to the Pygmies, who still live there today. The southern grassland was settled by ancestors of today's Kongo, Luba, and Mongo peoples. These Bantu- speakers founded several powerful kingdoms. One of them, Kongo was visited by Portuguese missionaries and explorers. The Europeans saw Africa as a source of wealth, and traders were soon followed by cruel slave traders. In 1879, King Leopold II of Belgium declared this region his own personal property. International protests at the human misery caused by Leopold's rule led the Belgian government to take control. Belgium granted independence in 1960. This was followed by a violent struggle for power led by Patrice Lumumba. At the same time, the rich southern copper-mining province of Katanga , now called Shaba, tried to break away from the new republic. The United Nations sent peacekeeping troops, and the Belgians left.
In the 1970s under President Mobotu, the country was renamed Zaire. Mobutu brought unity and a new national identity. Women began to find opportunities In jobs and education . However, many accused Mobutu of corruption. He banned political opposition, and in the 1990s, Mobotu's rule was challenged by riots and demands for democratic election. In 1994, Zaire's economy was further burdened by an influx of refugees fleeing from the civil war in neighboring Rwada.

Bound feet shoes

During the Qing dynasty in China, it was fashionable for girls as young as four to bind their feet. Dainty feet were considered the height of beauty and it was the necessary thing to do if young girls wanted to ensure prospective suitors for their future. This painful tradition started with the Chinese aristocracy in the tenth century when bound feet marked women as belonging to the richer classes and therefore relieved them from performing menial tasks. It gradually became popular with all Chinese women, including peasant girls from the provinces. Mothers forced their daughters to bind their feet in hopes of finding them a suitable husband. Miniature shoes known as 'Sam Chuin Kam Lin' or 'three-inch lotus feet shoe measure just that -3 inches in length-and had to be custom-made for the bound feet.
