A campus tour is more than a walk around the quad, it’s one of the best opportunities for students to figure out whether a college actually feels like the right fit.
As families head out on college visits, make the most of your time on campus by looking beyond the admissions presentation. Here are some tips:
👀 Pay attention to everyday campus life. Do students seem engaged and happy? Can you picture yourself there?
❓ Ask thoughtful questions. Learn about academics, advising, internships, housing, campus traditions and what students actually do on weekends.
📚 Explore your intended major. If possible, visit the academic buildings and learn more about classes, research and opportunities within your area of interest.
📍 Explore beyond the official tour. Walk through the student center, grab something to eat, check out the surrounding town and experience campus like a student would.
📝 Take notes after every visit. Colleges can quickly start to blend together — jot down what you loved, what gave you pause and how you felt while you were there.
And remember: the “best” college isn’t necessarily the most prestigious one — it’s the one where your student can see themselves learning, growing and thriving.
