Selfcare is essential as a facilitator. Spending time holding space for clients who are healing from all sorts of trauma can be emotionally, mentally and physically exhausting. Developing a selfcare rituals and routines to prevent burnout is an important skill for a facilitator.

Clients should have specific expectations of their facilitator when they choose a psilocybin experience. Here are a few:
1. Preparation and Orientation:
Setting Intentions: The facilitator will help the client set clear intentions for their experience, guiding them to articulate what they hope to achieve or explore.
2. Education and Information:
Substance Education: Information about the specific psychedelic substance, its effects, potential risks, and expected duration.
Legal and Ethical Considerations: Understanding the legal status of the substance in their region and any ethical considerations around its use.
3. Creating a Safe Environment:
Physical Setting: Ensuring a comfortable, safe, and controlled environment for the experience.
Emotional Safety: Providing a supportive and non-judgmental presence, establishing trust and rapport with the client.
4. Guidance During the Experience:
Monitoring: The facilitator will monitor the client’s physical and emotional state, ensuring their safety throughout the experience.
Support and Intervention: Offering verbal guidance or support if the client encounters challenging emotions or situations, helping them navigate and integrate these experiences.
5. Integration:
Post-Experience Processing: Facilitators assist clients in making sense of their experience, discussing insights, emotions, and any challenging aspects that arose.
Integration Practices: Providing guidance on how to integrate the insights and changes from the experience into everyday life. This might include journaling, therapy, meditation, or referring to a mental health professional.
6. Confidentiality and Professionalism:
Confidentiality: Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding the client’s experience and personal information.
Ethical Standards: Upholding professional and ethical standards, including respecting boundaries and the client's autonomy.
7. Aftercare and Follow-up:
Continued Support: Some facilitators may offer follow-up sessions to continue processing and integrating the experience.
Referrals: If needed, they may refer clients to additional resources such as therapists, support groups, or healthcare providers.
Clients should feel free to ask facilitators about their experience, approach, and any other questions they have to ensure they feel comfortable and informed.

Holding space for a client, whether healing from trauma or unleashing greater creativity, can be emotionally, mentally and sometimes, physically tiring. Facilitators need to set regular routines for self care. Set aside time regularly for a hobby or activity that brings joy and relaxation. This could be anything from painting, gardening, cooking, reading, or playing a musical instrument. Engaging in creative or leisurely activities helps relieve stress, boosts mood, and provides a sense of accomplishment.

Facilitators mental and emotional health is real. Holding space for clients who are dealing with significant trauma, substance use disorder, anxiety, or depression can take its toll. Facilitators MUST make selfcare a priority. Make time to connect with friends, family, or supportive community members regularly. Social connections are crucial for emotional support and well-being. Whether it's through a phone call, video chat, or in-person meet-up, nurturing these relationships can provide comfort and reduce feelings of isolation.

Facilitators need to be self aware and create routines and rituals to protect their own mental and emotional energy. One method is physical activity. Regular exercise is a powerful tool for improving mental health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as walking, yoga, cycling, or any activity you enjoy, several times a week. Physical movement helps reduce anxiety, depression, and stress while boosting mood and energy levels.

Being a facilitator can be draining. Holding space for someone who is experiencing a life altering experience for 6 hours or longer takes a toll unless you build your own strong selfcare routines. Practice mindfulness and meditation: Dedicate time to mindfulness practices or meditation. This can help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and promote a sense of calm. Even just 10-15 minutes a day can make a significant difference in your mental well-being.
