Booster Shots now available at CPUT Vaccination Centre

Dear Staff and Students



The CPUT vaccination is once again open to provide CPUT staff, students and members of the public with a vaccination against COVID-19.

All members of the CPUT community whom have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to do so. The vaccines remain very effective for preventing infection, particularly severe disease and death from COVID-19.



The CPUT Vaccination Centre now offers both the Pfizer BioNTec MRnA vaccine and the Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) vaccine. The CPUT vaccination centre is also offering booster vaccinations to all previous recipients of the Pfizer or Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Persons whom received the initial two doses of the Pfizer vaccine are eligible for a booster vaccine dose (3rd dose) 180 days (or six months) after the second dose of the vaccine. Persons who received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine (single dose) are eligible for a booster vaccine 60 days (2 months) after the initial dose.



All staff and students are welcome to book an appointment by registering on the OPA system, alternatively visit the centre to receive a vaccination.

The CPUT Vaccination Centre remains open Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm.

I am Wendal Koopman, the IT co-ordinator for the faculty of Informatics and Design.

Why did I get vaccinated? It is simple; The vaccine is the only true protection we have as a global community. Not only are you protecting yourself but you are protecting those who are immunocompromised and therefore cannot take the vaccine so it is our social responsibility to protect them. Vaccines have wiped out or reduced the effects of many virus outbreaks: Polio, Rubella, Hib, Measles, Pertussis and others. We have been taking vaccines from childhood so this should not be a new concept.

Did I experience side effects: No, nothing but a slightly sore deltoid muscle (site of the jab)

Would I recommend this to anyone: Absolutely! Please, Please, Please get the jab - there is enough *scientific* evidence that it saves lives.

✔︎ It’s safer than getting the disease. COVID-19 can lead to serious, sometimes life-threatening complications.

My name is Nthabiseng Maake. A senior peer educator at CPUT HIV Unit. I am just here to share my vaccination experience.



When I made a decision to go vaccinate, I first registered on the OPA system. When I got to the Vaccination Centre, I was scared because I did not know what to expect. The staff was very friendly towards me. They helped me register on the EVDS as I haven’t registered yet at that time. After that they showed me to the cubicle (vaccination spot) where I would be vaccinated. I was scared of the needles, the outcome and the possible side effects.



Before I got vaccinated I was informed about all the necessary information I needed to know to put me as ease. I was well equipped. The staff member who was vaccinating me was very gentle with me as I did not feel intense pain when getting vaccinated.



After being vaccinated with my first jab of the Phizer vaccine, I was told to sit down for 15 minutes so that they could monitor me. Afterwards they even asked me if I am okay and I told them I am and they released me.



I realised that I was scared for nothing because everything went smoothly and the staff made sure I feel at ease all the time. I am really grateful the friendly stuff members for their services.



Now I am just waiting for my second jab of the Phizer vaccine so that I can say I am protected against severe COVID-19 infection and against hospitalisation, though I will still need to take precautions. I want to encourage all my peers to come and get vaccinated to protect yourself and those around you.
