Lovely vegan lunch at The Tinkers Granddaughter with Bournemouth Vegans then a stroll across the open New Forest heaths where we were rewarded with close encounters of the wild kind; roe deer, fallow, pipit, kite, Dartford warbler and a pair of female adders basking, only caught one on camera but SO pretty.

Also found a dead and dehydrated young male, last year's, probably caught by an avian predator then dropped and lost. Another addition to the teaching aids.

A reliable year-round fresh and zingy wild green, hoary(hairy) bittercress (I've never found it especially bitter). This tasty little plant of damp ground contains all the yummy superfood properties of watercress, without the food miles and the plastic packaging. Win Win!

Just a snippet of this fungi season. It's not over yet though! A few stalwarts carry on through winter and a few slug-a-beds aren't quite fruiting yet so don't put your baskets away just yet

Right now the hogweed leaves and the cowparsley flowers are delicious! We sautéed them with seasoning and tried them with balsamic too, I prefer without though, so the fresh sweet greens speak for themselves. Try them and let me know what you think!

Duke and Felix had a very productive day rescuing 15-20 (I lost count) elderberry bushes from the path edge and translocating them into an elder thicket at the end of the orchard. Selecting, pruning, lifting, moving and planting! All in the old March rain and sleet! Well done team, so proud of them. We'll keep you posted on their recovery the bushes, not the boys 😀
