Distinguishing test between alkene and alkane using bromine water.
To distinguish between an alkene and an alkane, add an orange-brown solution of bromine water to each. The bromine water will turn colourless when added to an alkene because the double bond reacts with the bromine. The solution will remain orange-brown when added to an alkane because alkanes do not react with bromine water
