WP4BL Family,
We are writing to inform you that leadership of WP4BL has made a decision that we believe is best for our organizing efforts. After lengthy discussions and decision-making process, WP4BL is formally dissaffiliating from the Showing Up for Racial Justice Chapter Network. SURJ is the national organization of which we have been a chapter for almost 11 years.
Why is this happening?
Over time, WP4BL and SURJ have become more parallel than intersecting. We felt this in a decreased emphasis on chapter support, the absence of connection to other chapters as we autonomously navigated our local organizing terrain, and strategic and tactical misalignments with the national org. Recently, we came to a crossroads when SURJ announced that chapters must sign a legal charter document. Our leadership body, among other SURJ chapters in the network, chose to amicably disaffiliate rather than sign on to a document we did not feel reflected our values in process or content. We will continue to collaborate with SURJ in the future as it makes sense, as well as chapters in the network and other dissaffiliated chapters. Working together is imperative, and we believe that we can continue existing and power-building in a different form.
What will this decision mean for WP4BL’s work? What can I expect?
Nothing about our values, strategy, tactics, and work on the ground will change. Disaffilitating will mean losing our affiliate name “SURJ Los Angeles” as well as access to our mass email/events platform which is provided through SURJ. We will transition to another platform and there may be a delay in mass emails during that transition phase, so please refer to our IG page for updates . We will email you to alert you of the transition in advance. We will continue to make announcements about SURJ actions at our General Meetings and will work with any new formation of a SURJ LA should that come to be. While the chapter is disaffliating, individuals can continue to take actions with SURJ by signing up for SURJ’s list serv.
