๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿฌ Dolphin Watching Adventure! ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ“ธ
Last Saturday, we embarked on an unforgettable boat trip to witness the beauty of the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, as known as Chinese white dolphin. ๐ŸŒŠโœจ
Did you know that younger dolphins often have a darker grey coloration, while adults can appear lighter or even pinkish? ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ’– Check out our photos and videos to see some of these incredible creatures in action! You might notice that some dolphins arenโ€™t white at all โ€“ theyโ€™re just the juveniles!
We were thrilled to see so many dolphins swimming around and being playful! ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ’ฆ However, it's important to remember that their habitat is threatened by pollution, fishing activities, and habitat loss. Thatโ€™s why conservation efforts are vital for their survival! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š
A special thanks to the Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society for their invaluable guidance and for sharing their knowledge with our OST students! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’™ Together, we can make a difference for these magnificent creatures!
๐Ÿ‘‰ Swipe to see more amazing moments from our trip! ๐Ÿ“ทโœจ

What We Talk About When We Talk About ๐Ÿค”๐ŸŒŠ

As we mentioned in our last post, ๐Ÿชธare vital for the . They provide coastal protection for communities ๐Ÿ–๏ธ and serve as habitats for fish ๐Ÿ  and various marine species.

The coral fragments weโ€™ve collected will be cut and anchored onto โ€œplugsโ€ then will stay in the nursery tanks in our lab.

Coral sands, made from natural coral material, are used to create these โ€œplugs.โ€ They provide essential nutrients ๐ŸŒฑ and a suitable surface for the coral fragments to attach and grow, enhancing the success of our restoration efforts.

We will take good care of the coral fragments until they fully recover. Once they are healthy and strong again ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ, weโ€™ll transplant them into the sea ๐ŸŒŠ near our campus.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Our Story

Our Department of Ocean Science (OCES) emphasizes on cross-disciplinary research and educational programs in Ocean Science and Technology. We have three research foci: Marine Ecology, Oceanography, and Ocean Technology. The study sites include the estuary of the Pearl River, the coastal bays of Hong Kong, and the deep sea (including the South China Sea).

The Department offers full-fledged educational programs: undergraduate (BSc), taught-based postgraduate (MSc), and research-based (MPhil and PhD) degrees. These programs aim to explore related issues with different foci, meet the needs of different levels (local, regional and international), and train experts in different capacities (academia, private and public sectors).

A major emphasis in our UG and PG curricula is the provision of practicum experience, experiential learning, study trips and overseas attachments to enhance studentsโ€™ academic, career and personal development. These include partnerships with local organizations (such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies) to offer practicums and internships, as well as capstone projects and study trips in collaboration with universities in mainland China, Taiwan and Japan. Furthermore, we will develop partnerships with universities and corporations in neighboring cities that have strong presence in ocean research and maritime industry (such as Shenzhen, Xiamen and Singapore) to provide more learning experiences for our students, as well as to enrich our curricula through the development of new courses, research opportunities, and training programs.
