As an athlete and a coach, I try to do everything as correctly as possible. But to do things correctly, we also need to understand common mistakes we can easily make that can have a big impact. I'm definitely not immune from making mistakes in training but if we can avoid some easily avoidable mistakes we should.

Here's our first Common Training Mistake 👇

📣Training too Hard on Easy Days, and Training too Easy on Hard Days

What we need to understand:

👉 Every training session has a purpose and a goal. If you hit the wrong intensity for the given workout, this will effect all subsequent workouts and will likely reduce the effectiveness of the given workout.

👉 This mistake also causes athletes to spend too much time in the "pointless zone" of moderate. A moderate "easy run" misses the point. A moderate "intense workout" misses the point. Spending too much time in the "middle" decreases the physiological responses we're training for.

👉 Easy workout that you go too hard can lead to injury and are often the reason why athletes are then unable to hit their hard workouts hard enough. They simply aren't recovered.

👉 Athletes who train like this likely don't experience much improvement in fitness or performance. . .
✅ Avoid spending too much time in this "no man's land" training intensity
✅ Understand there is more to gain by spending time at each end of the spectrum
✅ If you have a coach and they are providing pace/effort guidelines, listen to them! . .
Over the next few weeks I'll be going over common training mistakes athletes make and how to avoid them. The best advice I can give to make sure you stay on track toward goals and avoid these common pitfalls is to team up with a good coach who can skillfully guide your training and help you navigate obstacles that come along. If you're in need of a coach, let's talk!

Perfect start to a long weekend. Knocked out our long ride and brick. Weather was bearable. Small taste of what cooler days will feel like when they come 🤣🤣

I kept HR low and my pace easy so the heat wouldn’t destroy me. Finally finished a long ride and without feeling discouraged and headache free.
And I was able to run in the mid 9’s. The cooler it gets the faster I’ll get. Had to walk a few seconds to keep my HR semi reasonable but it made me happy to see the 9’s.

What does your recovery look like? I love my momentous products. Have any questions let me know - I am on Team Momentous and an ambassador.

Imagine Showing Up to Race Day Feeling Prepared

You've put in the work. You've followed a plan designed specifically for you. You've built fitness consistently and avoided the common mistakes that leave athletes injured, exhausted, or underprepared.

That's the value of coaching.

You don't need to figure it all out on your own. You need a plan, guidance, accountability, and support from someone invested in your success.

If you have an upcoming triathlon or running race and want expert guidance to help you train with confidence, I'd love to help.

DM or comment "coaching" and let's build a plan that gets you to the start line—and the finish line—feeling strong.

Perfect start to the day, a nice early morning swim with athletes and friends.

Love getting to swim with them. I can stop and help them, watch their stroke and offer suggestions.

How often do you get feedback from your coach?

The Best Training Plan Is the One You Can Actually Follow.

We all hit bumps in the road while we are training, but you have to keep going. It may not be exactly what's on your plan but consistent training over time—not perfect training—is what leads to success.

When you have a coach in your corner, they help you overcome those bumps.

When challenges come up, we can adapt your plan. Miss a workout? We adjust. Busy week ahead? We modify the schedule. Feeling fatigued? We make smart changes to keep you progressing.

When you purchase a predesigned plan - you don't get the adjustments when challenges come up. You don't have that person in your corner to go to for your questions, concerns.

So, when you sign up for that next race - If you're looking for a flexible, personalized approach that helps you stay on track without burnout, coaching may be exactly what you need.

DM or comment "I'm Ready" and let's start the conversation.

The older I get, the more I need to stretch and work on mobility, which also leads me to do research on what are the best practices. If you are like me you don't have much time, so here are the essential things athletes should know!

🎯 Common muscles that most runners should stretch: calves, hip flexors, piriformis.
🎯 My rule of thumb: if stretching prior to a workout or race, I use dynamic stretches (moving through ranges of motion) that also help warm up tissues. If stretching after a workout or race, I use static stretches (holding a stretch without moving).
🎯 The stiffer a muscle (and tendon) the greater the elastic response, so some stiffness is desirable. The range of stiffness/flexibility should provide adequate joint mobility for the activity you're involved in. Mobility is the goal, not flexibility per say.
🎯 In general, the only muscles that should be stretched are those that are shortened and overactive and contribute to muscle imbalances across joints. DO NOT stretch muscles that are already over-long and therefore likely underactive, and DO stretch muscles that are short and likely overactive. A common example: stretch hip flexors and do not stretch Glut Max and Glut Medius.
🎯 If statically stretching, the stretch needs to be held at least :30 to elicit results, and may be held up to 2:00. I have been holding my stretches longer and wow can I feel the difference.
🎯 Be careful of your hamstring. It is unique as it tends to feel tight but is often already over-long AND overactive. It can benefit from self myofascial release but usually should not be stretched, especially not statically.

hahaha....I am usually all about the Monday motivation but after two days of racing -
day one - cheer squad and mount/ dismount line volunteer- (because our races cannot happen without volunteers)
day two - racing myself along with fellow athletes and friends.

Busy, fun-filled weekend at Lago Mar for some racing.

Saturday the kids raced- they all did amazing. I love seeing them with their big smiles and better skills than me 🤣🤣. Need to practice my mounts and dismounts and running with my bike with them.

Sunday was the sprint triathlon and the duathlon. It was so fun to be out there with some of my athletes and friends. We all survived the heat and humidity some better than others 🤣🤣
Congratulations to Thomas on his 2nd place in his AG. He’s getting more and more comfortable- and definitely will be ready for his first 70.3 at Waco.

Mina did the relay with his family and they came away with 2nd place also. Congratulations!!

The swim and bike were great. The run - woozers. I’ll be doing a lot of bricks the next 3 weeks before Tri-Cities 70.3.
And praying it’s a lot cooler in Washington.

I squeezed out 3rd in my AG, just wish I had a better run in me.
