As children become confident with digraphs, learning trigraphs becomes a natural next step. Today, we explored “ch” and “tch” — two letter combinations that make the same /ch/ sound.

✨ ch is commonly found at the beginning of words like chair, chick, and cheese.

✨ tch is usually found at the end of short vowel words like catch, match, and itch.

Instead of memorising endless spelling rules, children learn to spot patterns through engaging phonics activities. Once they understand these patterns, reading and spelling become much easier and more enjoyable!

Letter T and S are often considered versatile because they occur frequently in English, combine easily with many other letters and allow children to build many words quickly.

After learning S, A and T, children can already read:
- sat
- at
- as

The letter A is introduced early in phonics because it appears in many simple everyday words and helps children quickly learn to blend sounds into words such as cat, hat, bat and sat. This builds confidence and early reading success.

Letter C can sometimes be called soft C when it comes just right before the letter E, I and Y.

Do you know S is always taught early in phonics? The sound /s/ is easy to pronounce and hear. Children can stretch the sound “sssss”. This makes it easier to blend words later. It combines well with other early letters:

- sip
