NOMINATION PERIOD FOR SENATE IS NOW OPEN UNTIL MARCH 11TH. Being a Student Senator is an amazing opportunity for people who want to learn more about academic governance at the University or are looking for more of a professional student leadership position. It is also one of the best ways to network with faculty, staff and senior administrators (like President Vaccarino). We hope to see many new faces next year!

All undergraduate students are elected by their program, and graduate students by their college. Please return all forms to the Secretariat's Office (4th floor UC). Any additional questions, please feel free to comment on this post or email [email protected]

Hi Gryphons! Last night at the Senate meeting our VP Academics and Provost, Charlotte Yates, presented our University's Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The KPI are measurable values that demonstrate how effectively an organization is achieving its key objectives. Here are the highlights of how we compared to other Canadian universities:

- Guelph has had a slight decline in applications this year. There has been a growing number of applicants from the GTA compared to a decline from the rest of Ontario.

- They are still discussing targets for international students (want to increase from 2-3% of applicants to 10%) as well as pursuing active enrolment of out of province students to fit with the strategic goal of diversity in our student population

- Between 2014-2015 there has been a 59% increase in applicants actually choosing the University of Guelph (2nd highest increase of confirmations in the province after Ryerson).

- As of 2012, undergraduate students have a 91.7% retention rate, the 4th highest in Canada. Graduate students have a 77.1% retention rate, the 6th highest in Canada. (Retention rate = the percentage of a school's first-time, first-year undergraduate students who continue at that school the next year). Funding from the government is based on these performance metrics.

- While there is growth in undergraduate and graduate full time enrolment, there has been a decrease in the number of full time faculty. This has been hurting our ratings as the student:faculty ratio is less than other places.

- We have the largest research funding of all comprehensive Canadian universities (almost $200,000/full time faculty).

- As many of you know, we have the highest student satisfaction in Ontario (and Canada, according to MacLean's) across all undergraduate and graduate years.

- Finally, undergraduate employment rates of Guelph students 6 months after graduation were at approximately 91% in 2014-2015. Accordingly, the University of Guelph's student loan default rates are only about 3%.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will contact appropriate sources for the information!

NEXT SENATE MEETING: FEBRUARY 8

ITEMS ON THE AGENDA: Strategic Renewal Process

Strategic renewal is a process that helps chart the University’s path in the future. It has the goal of creating a document clearly stating strategic vision to guide planning over next 5-10 years and renew our sense of institutional pride. Now at phase 2 the ideas heard from community consultations in phase 1 will be summarized into themes that will be used to consult further with the University community.

Gryphons, we are disappointed to report a vandalism this morning within the new expansion of the Athletic Centre. Below are a few pictures of the damages. The removal of this graffiti involves sandblasting and, after their best efforts, there will still be a noticeable difference. The construction team may actually have to tear down and re-build the walls.
Though this may not be an academic concern, as Senators we also represent the interests of our greater community. This act was not in accordance with our University's values. We urge everyone to act with kindness, tolerance and respect to both the people and facilities on campus. Thank you.
