Advancing climate action through strategic partnerships
A delegation from the Department of Civil Engineering, GIK Institute visited the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP Pakistan in Islamabad to explore joint initiatives in climate resilience, water security, hydrology, and environmental sustainability.
The GIKI delegation included:

At UNDP Pakistan, the team engaged in productive discussions with Mr. Shiraz Ali Shah, Head of the Resilience, Environment and Climate Change Unit, and Mr. Fazli Imran, National Project Coordinator. The conversation centered on the establishment of the Center for Environment and Water Research (CEWR) at GIKI, along with potential collaborations through the development initiatives of GCF and GEF.
These discussions represent a meaningful step toward building a globally connected, impact-driven research platform at GIKI—one that bridges the gap between scientific knowledge and actionable solutions for Pakistan’s most pressing environmental challenges.

A GIKI delegation led by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Tanoli, HoD Department of Civil Engineering, GIK Institute visited the UNESCO Pakistan office in Islamabad to explore collaboration on critical national priorities, including water security, climate resilience, and data-driven decision support systems. The GIKI delegation also included Dr. Zeeshan Asghar (P.E., M.ASCE) and Engr. Dr. Muhammad Waseem P.E.
The delegation met with Mr. Fuad Pashayev, UNESCO Representative in Pakistan, and Mr. Raza Shah, National Science Officer.
A central focus of the meeting was the proposal to establish a UNESCO Water Chair at GIKI, emphasizing AI and cloud‑enabled hydrological modeling. This initiative aims to foster sustainable water management, strengthen climate adaptation strategies, and support evidence‑based policymaking—key areas where advanced research and technological innovation are essential for Pakistan’s future.
The interaction underscored the importance of international partnerships and the strategic role of emerging digital technologies in addressing water and climate challenges.
GIKI looks forward to continued engagement with UNESCO to develop impactful, long-term solutions for a water-secure and climate-resilient Pakistan. 💧🌍

Our students from Batch 32 participated in the two-day DRR/CCA-EXPO25, organised by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, focusing on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Representing their Final Year Project titled “Origami-Inspired Deployable Bridge System”, the student team, including Abduallah Ajeel, Talha Shafi, and Noor Fatima Naeem, showcased innovative structural solutions to support rapid response in disaster-affected regions.

Under the supervision of Dr. Hafiz Ahmed Waqas, serving as their Final Year Project supervisor, their participation highlighted GIKI’s commitment to advancing applied research for resilience and safer infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and beyond.

Our Batch 32 visited Provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) Peshawar on 25th November 2025. Our students were briefed about the following :
- How PDMA operates during emergencies.
- Their core responsibilities in disaster management.
- Why KPK remains highly vulnerable to natural hazards throughout the year.

This visit provided our students with valuable learning, offering real-world insights into disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and response mechanisms. Batch 32 gained practical knowledge that complements their classroom learning and strengthens their understanding of disaster resilience in Pakistan.

Students of DCvE Visit DHA Phase-5 Head Office Complex — Learning Construction in Action

Today, students of the Department of Civil Engineering (DCvE) had the opportunity to visit the DHA Phase-4 Head Office Complex, where they observed real-time construction practices, on-site coordination, and practical applications of the concepts they study in class.

The visit was led by Dr. Shiraz Ahmed and Dr. Hafiz Ahmed Waqas and Dr. Zeeshan Asghar who guided the students through critical aspects of project ex*****on, structural detailing, quality control, and safety protocols. Experiences like these play a vital role in bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) and the Tunneling Institute of Pakistan (TIP), Frontier Works Organization (FWO) to strengthen collaboration in tunneling, hydrology, and advanced geospatial technologies.

This partnership will promote:
🚀 Drone & LiDAR training programs
🎓 Internship opportunities for GIKI students
🔬 Joint research in tunneling, hydrology, and flood risk mitigation
🏗️ Workshops, expert lectures, and consultancy collaborations
