JOHN SALT
(John Scarlett Alexander Salt (1905–1947) – son of Gordon Locksley Salt, grandson of Titus Salt jnr.)

AMERICAN wireless listeners to British programmes prefer Northern accents to “snooty upper class voices,” said Mr. John Salt, the B.B.C.’s Deputy North American Director—temporarily home from the States—in an interview tonight at Broadcasting House.

Mr. Salt is a member of the well-known West Riding woollen textile family of that name. He has named his young son, Daniel, after that Daniel Salt, of Shipley, whose son became Sir Titus Salt and the head of the great firm of Salt’s (Saltaire).

From 1936 to 1939 the B.B.C.’s North Regional director, Mr. Salt has been with the Corporation in New York since just after America entered the war. He said tonight that on the evidence of listener research investigations the number of American listeners to B.B.C. programmes has increased during the past two years in the face of the most severe competition.
